cellofallon Posted March 1, 2013 at 04:13 PM Report Posted March 1, 2013 at 04:13 PM Compare the experience of those learning Chinese with nowadays and there is a world of difference. That goes not just for the numbers of people studying Chinese, but also what was taught, living restrictions and how close people from a foreign nation and China were able to become depending on controls. I find this a fascinating subject which gives a window into Chinese history. With your help I would like to make a list of all the works in fiction that tell of someone's experience in China as a foreign student. Here's ones that I know of. Please add any you have come across: An African Student in China (1963) by Emmanuel John Hevi. His experiences left him bitterly anti-CCP and disillusioned with Socialism after what he encountered and in Chinese society. Red China Blues (1996) Jan Wong. Wong enters China as a student and the first section of the book describes her studies of Chinese in Beijing in the 1980s. Chinese Lessons (2007) John Pomfret revisits the lives if 5 of his classmates through Mao's China Thanks! Quote
