文言太濃,白話太淡,語以半文半白者佳。禪雲:「此岸不住,彼岸不留。道在中流。」此亦中庸之道也。錢鍾書《管錐篇》半文半白而近於文;《辭海》半文半白而近於白。吾人則取其中而用之,語欲簡雅,意欲明易,鮮用偏典,不著佶屈聱牙之字,務使覽者一讀而明焉,此難也。

《悔晚齋臆語》

所謂半文半白,即從文言文、白話文​​各取所長。「文」而通俗易懂,「白」而言簡意賅。然而,從「文」者,則不宜抒情又生硬無情,從「白」者,語感自然卻言不盡意。不知「半文半白而近於白」的書面語應該從何入手?

夫話出於口為語,出於筆則為文。言談之中,文白夾雜,難免有賣弄之嫌,甚至酸腐可笑。文白者,油與水也。文白並用而化者,油水相融;不化者,油水不融。化與不化,全賴作者之功力。故傳席先生謂『語以半文半白者佳』,其意或實為文以文白相濟者佳。

文白相濟之文,兼二者之所長,文而不奧,白而不繁,確有其高妙處。然各人作文,目的、受眾各不相同,三者用誰為佳,當視情形,不可一概而論。就我而言,我還是偏愛文言與文白相濟之文。今人所寫之白話多臃腫拖沓,偶遇簡約之文,又嫌太白,讀來雖不至令人厭煩,亦覺寡味。

兄台若想習文白相濟之文體,可多看文言。唐德剛先生文章文白交融,亦可多看。

然而,從「文」者,則不宜抒情又生硬無情,

此言余不敢苟同。古文长於抒情,看《陈情表》便知。

子是文即半文白者也。文白相杂,其言易而其行不易。为杂文白,一不落拽文之窠臼而无可读,一不为市井俗言而乱文气,斯难矣。非文白而皆融会贯通者毋行之。
