tooironic Posted March 6, 2013 at 02:32 AM Report Share Posted March 6, 2013 at 02:32 AM Any recommendations for good online (and free) Chinese-Chinese dictionaries? At the moment I use: Zdic.net 在线新华字典 百度词典 重編國語辭典修訂本(中華民國教育部) (for a Taiwan perspective) (or try this link for a more improved experience, thanks OneEye!) But was wondering if there were any more available? Variety is always good. BTW I'm not looking for English-Chinese or Chinese-English dictionaries, nor paper dictionaries, or apps. Thanks! imron Posted March 6, 2013 at 04:28 AM Report Share Posted March 6, 2013 at 04:28 AM nciku also has a CC dictionary, but I don't know how good it is or isn't. Personally for online dictionaries I tend to use Zdic or 百度.
OneEye Posted March 6, 2013 at 08:40 AM Report Share Posted March 6, 2013 at 08:40 AM I was actually just wondering last night if there were any good (reasonably comprehensive) online dictionaries. Here's my ideal online dictionary: 繁體字 (rules out most of them I guess) example sentences in modern Chinese (as opposed to 四書五經 or 四大名著, which rules out 教育部國語辭典) Loads reasonably quickly (rules out nciku, though it doesn't look like their 繁體中文 page actually has 繁體) Taiwan-specific pronunciations (混淆 could be hǔnyáo or hùnyáo, but not hùnxiáo, 暫時 should be zhànshí, not zànshí) That last one may be asking way too much. But if anyone has seen such a unicorn, please let me know!
Kenny同志 Posted March 6, 2013 at 09:13 AM Report Share Posted March 6, 2013 at 09:13 AM I once entertained the idea of making an online C-C dictionary on my own, but I can't afford the time. Of course the dictionary would be in 正體字 and have a reasonable amount of example sentences in classical Chinese and semi-classical Chinese. Also, I would make the entries more search-friendly (this including fixing variants of certain words and weeding out false 成語 by breaking them down into general 詞語) and provide definitions of 詞語 by interpreting single characters. The dictionary would also cover the latest words and regional words and expressions used in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Useful appendices would be affixed to it. And I would also provide, where necessary, certain words with styles, i.e. formal, informal, taboo, offensive, rude, blah, blah, blah. iteachchina Posted March 8, 2013 at 01:57 AM Report Share Posted March 8, 2013 at 01:57 AM If you are using a computer, I like "Lingoes". It's free, and has a lot of dictionaries built in. It can do hover translate, group text translate, selected text translate, and a bunch more.
tooironic Posted March 8, 2013 at 04:18 AM Author Report Share Posted March 8, 2013 at 04:18 AM Does it have Chinese-Chinese though?
iteachchina Posted March 8, 2013 at 04:52 AM Report Share Posted March 8, 2013 at 04:52 AM I checked, and it shows 2 at least that I have. The website has like 50 dictionaries. Look for yourself and see if anythings suits your need: http://www.lingoes.net/en/dictionary/dict_search.php
OneEye Posted March 11, 2013 at 11:47 AM Report Share Posted March 11, 2013 at 11:47 AM There is finally a MUCH improved interface for the 國語辭典. Still not the perfect dictionary, but it's so much more usable than what's at the MOE website.

li3wei1 Posted March 12, 2013 at 07:29 AM Report Share Posted March 12, 2013 at 07:29 AM For some reason that link doesn't work with Firefox. It's fine with IE and Chrome, though.
