Pimsleur "later" vs "soon"

Recommended Posts

In Mandarin I, Unit 6, Pimsleur appears to use guòyíhuìr 过一会儿(guo4yi2huir4) to mean "later". However, in my dictionary, that is defined as "soon". The dictionary provides one definition of "later" as yìhuǐr jiàn (yi4huir3 jian4).

Any insights as to which one is correct, and what the difference is?

i think you're confusion also lies in the usage of 一会儿 which as far as I can tell means everything from "soon" to "at some point in the distant/not-to-distant future". I always get disturbed when a friend says he'll come over 一会儿, because I have no idea whether it will be 5 minutes later or 2 hours later. 一会儿 has wrecked many plans of mine because of its elasticity.

I think 过一会儿 is probably best rendered as "after a while"...

I've read that: 过了一会儿, is "after a while".
