soberbyker Posted April 3, 2013 at 04:45 PM Report Share Posted April 3, 2013 at 04:45 PM Can anyone tell me what the markings on this gun translate to in English?
xiaocai Posted April 3, 2013 at 11:37 PM Report Share Posted April 3, 2013 at 11:37 PM It says 绞筒 jiaotong. Apparently for a shotgun it means that its barrel is choked (or rifled). I could be wrong though as I know very little about guns and other military weapons.
soberbyker Posted April 4, 2013 at 02:57 AM Author Report Share Posted April 4, 2013 at 02:57 AM Thank you for your help, your answer would make sense. Shotgun barrels are often choked or have chokes you can install to help control the shot pattern.
abcdefg Posted April 7, 2013 at 09:29 AM Report Share Posted April 7, 2013 at 09:29 AM I agree that the words stamped on the barrel are 绞痛,like @xiaocai said above. Looks like a "12" below that stamping, most likely signifying that it's a 12 Gauge shotgun. If this is an older shotgun, I would wonder if this marking might mean the barrels are made from Damascus steel (and should not be fired with modern heavy loads.) Could you tell us a little more about this gun? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damascus_steel#Damascus_steel_in_gunmaking
soberbyker Posted April 7, 2013 at 12:01 PM Author Report Share Posted April 7, 2013 at 12:01 PM abcdefg, sadly I can not tell you more. The photo is all I have, a friend was looking to maybe buy the gun and the photo came from an auction site. It was described to be a 12 gauge shotgun. The site had this: Greener Single Barrel 12 Gauge Shotgun
abcdefg Posted April 8, 2013 at 04:01 AM Report Share Posted April 8, 2013 at 04:01 AM W. W. Greener is a famous British maker, dating back to 1829. And I see that they did make some Damascus shotguns. Not sure why a Greener barrel would have any Chinese writing, however. Seems odd. http://www.gunsinternational.com/W-W-GREENER-12-BORE-EJECTOR-SHOTGUN.cfm?gun_id=100310746
roddy Posted April 8, 2013 at 10:07 AM Report Share Posted April 8, 2013 at 10:07 AM Reminds me of this, a very early topic which taught me that people were going to use the site to ask really cool questions I could never have possibly anticipated. Links in the first post there don't work, but see the ones below.
soberbyker Posted April 8, 2013 at 01:10 PM Author Report Share Posted April 8, 2013 at 01:10 PM abcdefg, not sure, maybe it was a Chinese copy of a Greener Shotgun? The auction site had this comment: "WW Greener has the same side safety design", and apparently grenner had a far Eastern market, Japan and China. roddy, Thanks for that link, interesting for sure.
