Having lived in Taiwan for some time I get a lot of these this too.

The 番茄炒蛋 here at most small canteen-type restaurants is usually incredibly sweet, as is 糖醋魚片.  Seems that, especially near NTU, some people saw the restaurant business as being profitable and decided to get in on the racket while not knowing what they're doing...

 

That said, there is still some very nice food to have in both Taiwan and China.
