teachandlearn Posted April 18, 2013 at 11:29 AM Report Share Posted April 18, 2013 at 11:29 AM The sentence is"做父母的谁不爱儿女?" Now am I right by thinking that it means if you are a parent how can you not love your children? Grammar confuses me, I know it should be simple, but I don't know whether I am over complicating things. Being English seems to over complicate things. creamyhorror Posted April 18, 2013 at 11:58 AM Report Share Posted April 18, 2013 at 11:58 AM 父母谁不爱儿女? sounds weird to me, because it seems to refer to a particular pair of parents (e.g. the speaker's). Also it's very abrupt. 做父母的谁不爱儿女? sounds more natural, probably because 做父母的 (meaning 做父母的[人], "those who are parents") refers to parents in general. I wonder how one would express something about 大人. I'd be tempted to say 大人当中, ... but I guess 大人 can just stand as a topic on its own. Thus we have expressions like 女人我最大. tooironic Posted June 21, 2013 at 08:56 AM Report Share Posted June 21, 2013 at 08:56 AM Bear in mind that 做 here means 成为, roughly translated here as "to be [a person]; as [a person]".
