Ciferz Posted June 3, 2013 at 01:24 PM Report Posted June 3, 2013 at 01:24 PM Hello, I am having issues with the two characters mentioned in the topic, so please help me out here. These are the sentences in which I don't know what they mean: 斜月象一勾,三星象三點也。是心。言學仙不必在遠,只在此心。〇一部《西遊》,此是宗旨。 「《射阳集》四册,囗卷 ;《春秋列传序》;《西游记》。」 Thanks a lot! Quote
New Members vocabulaire Posted June 3, 2013 at 02:52 PM New Members Report Posted June 3, 2013 at 02:52 PM 〇 means 零 It looks more like a typo here. According to the dictionary "囗" means "围" or "国", however, few people know the original meaning of "囗". Sometimes, "囗" means "this character is unrecognizable in the original book", but more often than not, people just consider it a sign of censorship. When I was a child, those "囗" totally spoiled my enjoyment of reading, because every single paragraph of explicit descriptions of sex was substituted with a bunch of "囗". Quote
yakeyglee Posted June 3, 2013 at 03:29 PM Report Posted June 3, 2013 at 03:29 PM 〇 means 零 (líng, zero). I am not entirely sure why it is used here. 〇一部 appears to say "part 01" as opposed to "part 1", which may just be a formality. 囗 means 圍 (wéi, enclose), so I assume then that 囗卷 in this context means something along the lines of bound together as a scroll. However, this is somewhat peculiar usage since 囗 is typically regarded as a radical, not as a standalone character. Quote
Hofmann Posted June 3, 2013 at 06:44 PM Report Posted June 3, 2013 at 06:44 PM I don't know of any consistent usage of them in Classical Chinese, but if I were to guess, I'd think they're characters that can't be read/typed. Quote
drencrom Posted June 4, 2013 at 11:06 PM Report Posted June 4, 2013 at 11:06 PM The "doesn't show up in MS-Windows" character is a rectangle, while this character is clearly a square. Quote
OneEye Posted June 5, 2013 at 12:03 AM Report Posted June 5, 2013 at 12:03 AM After checking Google, it looks like 囗 is probably a missing character, and 〇 might be a typo, because the only page that shows up with "〇一部《西遊》,此是宗旨" is this one, but lots of pages show up without the 〇. Quote
Hofmann Posted June 5, 2013 at 11:48 AM Report Posted June 5, 2013 at 11:48 AM I wasn't talking about extra-Windows characters, but extra-Unicode characters. Quote
JIAKE Posted June 23, 2013 at 12:15 PM Report Posted June 23, 2013 at 12:15 PM If you see a square: □ It means a missing charactor. If you see a bigger frame that looks like a printing Chinese charactor: 囗 It is a Chinese charactor radical or an ancient Chinese charactor. If you see a small square like the above one: 口 It is the Chinese charactor "mouth". Quote
