laolee Posted March 11, 2005 at 06:02 PM Report Posted March 11, 2005 at 06:02 PM Has anyone had the chance to see this yet? I'm a big Ge You fan and was surprised to see a DVD version available for online order. It's supposedly a psychological thriller based on another Japanese film, though, I'm not sure which one. I'm really looking forward to this. Quote

laolee Posted March 12, 2005 at 05:37 PM Author Report Posted March 12, 2005 at 05:37 PM Uh-oh. Too late, I've ordered it and hope I like it more than you. Quote
laolee Posted April 1, 2005 at 04:30 PM Author Report Posted April 1, 2005 at 04:30 PM Well, yes, I did find SUFFOCATION slow too. Too often, I had cause to glance at the panel and see how much time elapsed. However, I did end up watching it three nights in a row! I found it unsatisfying, but strangely compelling. Ge You was too one-downbeat-note and there was not enough of Qin Hailu except as a ghost. The music and cinematography, however, was very good. Perhaps, the first time director relied on too many tricks to tell the story and overlooked polishing the script? He does note on the interview that filming started just two weeks after the principal actors were signed, so there was not much preparation time for the actors. Anyway, I will look forward to seeing his next film, whatever he decides to makes. Quote
