Year of the Yao Movie

Yao's ma and pa opened a restaurant/sports bar in Houston soon after Hooters opened in Shanghai. (No connection between these two phenomena.)

yes - i recently had dinner there. i thought it was reasonably tasty, way overpriced and caterted too much to the PF Chang's crowd. (no chinese on the menu? what's up with that?)

you can read about it at:

yaorestaurant.com

or read about Yao Ming taking Dikembe Mutumbo and Patrick Ewing to dinner there here:

The Yao Ming movie did not do well in Shanghai cinemas.

Hey tongyang, if you think Yao is nothing but a big woman then please give us your honest opinion of Wang Zhi Zhi.

Yeah, the Year of the Yao movie seems interesting. T-Mac is slowing him down and pushing the team back. Get rid of him and I hope Yao Ming will continue to improve upon his game and post-season success.

It wasn't long ago that Chinese NBA fans wanted to chop off the head of Steve Francis. Now T-Mac is supposed to write a self-criticism?

Yao Ming can't win a title all by himself in Houston. That's why the Rockets traded for T-Mac and re-signed Dikembe Mutombo.

You cannot be serious. This might be the dumbest thing I've ever seen written here.

Houston's last star center was Akeem the Dream. Hardly small shoes for any other big man to fill. Mutumbo is a big lanky dork who never had enough mass or agility to be of any use, thus he was more of an oddity than star material.

Jordan is the only one man game ever. Even Wilt Chamberlain had a better supporting cast.

As for Yao's play, he is a very up and down player. I took my wife to see him in a game, I think he had 10 points and played all of 45 minutes. The next night he almost had a triple double. I think he has the skills, but the fire isn't always there and leadership is not a concept taught in chinese sports (or teams sports in many countries). Houston is not exactly strong in many other positions either. If he was at a place like San Antonio, he'd have alot better group of people to learn from and be motivated by.

BTW I liked the movie, too bad they left out the part about Yao's parents not being allowed to move to Houston for a while by the big bad CCP. Gotta keep Yao loyal.

Huh? Mutumbo was a 4-time NBA defensive player of the year and is current #3 all time in blocked shots. Not to mention a 7-time All-Star, leading the league in rebounding 4 times, leading the league in blocked shots 5 straight years - he's a probable hall of fame player. that's certainly pretty useful.

Double huh? Yao's mom was living in Houston for at least 1 month prior to Yao's arrival. They never had any issues with moving to the US.

Count the number of NBA championships that Michael Jordan won without Scottie Pippen.

Go ahead, count 'em! Michael Jordan was in fact a "one man team" in 1986 when he dropped 63 points on the Boston Celtics in that famous playoff game. The Bulls drafted Scottie Pippen in 1987. Each one of Jordan's 6 championships was won with Pippen.

Yao Ming is well aware of the fact that he should kiss Da Zhi's donkey because Wang Zhi Zhi paved the way for Chinese basketball superstars to go to the NBA. I'm afraid Chinese basketball history may already be in the process of getting rewritten in China so that future generations will believe Yao Ming was the first Chinese player in the NBA. In fact he was third after Mengke Bateer, who participated in David Robinson's final season and won a championship.

There are so many silly rumors and misconceptions about Yao Ming floating around in China; it's quite amusing! I hope this thread attracts more so that some readers can be entertained while others are enlightened.
