rockytriton Posted March 12, 2005 at 02:09 AM Report Posted March 12, 2005 at 02:09 AM I'm not sure if this is the right place for this type of post, but: What is the correct place to say "懂" vs. "明白“? For instance: "我不明摆中文“ vs. "我不懂中文"? Thanks! Quote
danka Posted March 12, 2005 at 01:13 PM Report Posted March 12, 2005 at 01:13 PM My first thought was that there is no difference, but after some more thinking I have the feeling that they're not totally interchangeable in all situations. I have the feeling that 明白 is a more superficial (on the surface) understanding than 懂. This would mean that when someone says 我懂中文 means he has a deeper understanding of the Chinese language than the guy claiming 我明白中文. Some more examples to think about: I feel comfortable saying: 我不明白你的意思 but something feels awkward when I say 我不懂你的意思. Opposite: 他不懂礼貌 vs 他不明白礼貌. Maybe someone can confirm (or reject) my theory. I'm a little curious myself. Quote
guy of sn Posted March 12, 2005 at 02:50 PM Report Posted March 12, 2005 at 02:50 PM My English is very poor, but I will try my best to help. We don't unually say"我明白中文",we just say"我懂中文" 明白(meaning "understand")+certain things(for example a sentence) 我明白你的意思 我明白这句话 懂 means "understand" too , but can also mean "会" 我懂电脑 我懂打篮球 sometimes they are different Quote
ced1zh Posted March 12, 2005 at 03:04 PM Report Posted March 12, 2005 at 03:04 PM 他不懂礼貌= he's rude! 他不明白礼貌= he dont know what is being polite. Quote
