New Members Jen7520 Posted August 6, 2013 at 02:17 AM New Members Report Share Posted August 6, 2013 at 02:17 AM OK so here is the long and short of it...after a particularly bad breakup/divorce in which my 5 children saved me from making a terrible mistake i wanted to get some that expressed my freedom but gave thanks to them. What I WANTED was the Chinese symbol for hero, because they have saved my butt more times than I can count and they are my heroes. Then my youngest daughter wanted to get the same symbol (she's 18). When she went to the tattoo shop and had it drawn up, what they sketched for her looked NOTHING like mine. So, then I started doing internet searches. I have searched Chinese symbols & Japanese symbols. I have used a web site that lets you draw the symbol you want translated, but that is difficult because I don't know the proper brush strokes for the symbol that I have. At this point I don't even care if it something completely stupid but I would like to know....honestly ...what I have tattooed on my back. This is part of a larger back piece so the lines that "radiate" off of the symbol are not part of it, just the dark black "symbol" Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
imron Posted August 6, 2013 at 08:53 AM Report Share Posted August 6, 2013 at 08:53 AM The standard translation for hero is 英雄. The character you have is 俠 - which can mean hero in certain contexts, e.g. it's commonly seen in the name of superheroes, e.g. batman (蝙蝠俠), spiderman (蜘蛛俠), and is representative of those who stand up for/protect the weak and try to uphold justice and what is right, and there is also the implication that the person will be capable at fighting/martial arts. If a female was to get such a tattoo referring to herself, it would be better to get 女俠 rather than just 俠.
New Members Jen7520 Posted August 9, 2013 at 12:47 PM Author New Members Report Share Posted August 9, 2013 at 12:47 PM Thank you so much, I can actually live with that. I didn't get the tattoo in reference to myself but to reference my 5 children, so I am kinda of happy that it is somewhat general. At least it doesn't mean something completely random. again thank you
