senor boogie woogie Posted March 15, 2005 at 11:06 AM Report Posted March 15, 2005 at 11:06 AM Hola! I am an American living in Mainland China. I have asked this question and have heard different things. Here's the question, A Taiwanese lives his life in Taiwan until he is 30 years of age. Never been to China. Accepts a job in Shanghai. How does the Mainland Chinese authority view him? Is he a foreigner? can't be because China says that Taiwan is Chinese territory, thus he is a citizen. But, Taiwan is not a "loyal" province, so would the Taiwanese have to sign a paper declaring loyalty to the Motherland? I mean, if I was the central government in Beijing, I would not want Taiwanese here, but they are here. SECOND-------------- What are the nationality of Hong Kongers born before 1997? Are they British citizens? China does not recognize "dual citizenship" so what are they? Are they Hong Kong citizens? Chinese? What? Senor Quote

wix Posted March 15, 2005 at 10:46 PM Report Posted March 15, 2005 at 10:46 PM Interesting question. The status of Taiwanese citizens living in China is deliberately vague. I guess this suits both sides really as it enables Taiwanese to travel to China with a minimum of fuss but doesn't require either side to clarify their political positions. When Taiwanese enter China they are required to have a "taibaozheng". They don't use their passport or get a visa. However, as Taiwan has no diplomatic representation in China and because the legal status of Taiwanese living in China is poorly defined they are vulnerable to exploitation. Quote
