chajadan Posted August 25, 2013 at 08:51 AM Report Share Posted August 25, 2013 at 08:51 AM Deck available here: https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1784566182 This deck is designed to test your pronunciation of characters as you see them, and that's all. It contains the most frequent 2500 characters and is estimated to account for around 98% of all characters you will ever encounter. If one were to learn the pinyin for each of these characters, it would greatly enhance that person's ability to look up unknown vocabulary in a paper dictionary, something I like to do. Some entries have multiple pronunciations given. --charlie
valikor Posted August 26, 2013 at 01:12 PM Report Share Posted August 26, 2013 at 01:12 PM I agree that looking up words in a paper dictionary might be helpful. But, I would think it would be better to (at the same time) learn some of the basic meanings of each character. Knowing the meaning might make it easier to remember the pronunciation. (For example, if I've heard the word "strawberry" before in Chinese, and I run across the second character (mei2 -- no Chinese text support on this comp), I will probably be able to remember it very quickly since it has a meaningful context (I know the meaning, and can connect that with the composition of the character; plus, I have heard it pronounced with the second tone before, as opposed to a similar characters that might be pronounced with a different tone, or an entirely different sound altogether). But if you just try to remember the "mei" that has a cao-zi-tou is second tone, I think you would end up spending more time learning the characters. chajadan Posted August 26, 2013 at 04:41 PM Author Report Share Posted August 26, 2013 at 04:41 PM For some people that may be true, but for me it's not the case. The point of this deck is to focus on pinyin only. And in this way, I go through the cards significantly faster, and have a new skill to show for it.
