New Members 我喜欢苹果 Posted September 23, 2013 at 04:00 AM New Members Report Share Posted September 23, 2013 at 04:00 AM Are all of these okay? Are 不要汽水喝太多 and 汽水喝太多不要 completely wrong? I'm confused as to where you can play the verbs and direct objects because I've seen many variations.
davoosh Posted September 23, 2013 at 10:42 AM Report Share Posted September 23, 2013 at 10:42 AM I think your first one, “不要喝太多汽水" is probably the most neutral way to say it. However, the other two sentences are not really acceptable grammatically. If you want to move the object (汽水)to the front, then it would become a 'topic', and has to precede everything, so you end up with: 汽水不要喝太多. This type of sentence might seem odd at first to English speakers, but if you think of it as something like 'as for soft drinks, don't drink too much', that could help. (Also, placing the topic at the front is quite common in Chinese).
jkduck Posted September 23, 2013 at 11:40 AM Report Share Posted September 23, 2013 at 11:40 AM The first one is right,we usually say that. The direct object should be put behind the verb in general. I do not think we use the second one, but if you change 不要 to 不好, it becomes a right sentence, but the meaning has a little change. The third one is wrong not just grammatically, we do not say that. skylee Posted September 23, 2013 at 12:24 PM Report Share Posted September 23, 2013 at 12:24 PM 不要喝太多汽水 is correct. The other two are not. 汽水不要喝太多 is also fine.
