Is it just colloquial putonghua or some closely-related dialect? Also what is the exact meaning of 早知道 in this context?

I have no idea. I'm still trying to make sense of I Am The Walrus. :)

I had this song from years back. Don't know how I got it. Don't know anything about the band either.

The environment?

Are you sure those are all the lyrics?

I found a live version of the song and they broadcast the lyrics on a screen setup behind the 3 guys. It seems a lot more lyrics. The waters of Guizhou, Yunnan and more. The lyrics are also printed in the subtitles.

Only 3 instruments and they were able to achieve such an expansive sound.

Oh, if my judgement is correct, this must be a folk song.

What was it Bob Dylan said when he was asked to define folk music back in the early sixties?

I don't remember, but, it was something weird and elliptical. ;-)

@Kobo: looks to me like the studio version only has those two lines, but the live version has a lot more. It seems a lot less cryptic than "I am the walrus". The structure is

早知道[A], 是做啥呀呢

Where A is something that makes doing B futile. No problems with that, but I don't entirely understand the structure. Does it mean "if I'd known about A earlier I wouldn't have done B"? Or "you should know that A, therefore don't B"? Or "now that I know A, what's the point of doing B"? (Clearly I'm overthinking this...)

Anyway, my contribution:

Not sure if it's my absolute favourite, but it's up there.

五天几年 sung by 林凡 from the Taiwanese drama The Fierce Wife.

I'm watching it in Cantonese to keep up with my Chinese studies. Not enjoying it much. But what the hey...

林凡 or Freya Lin (Lim)'s father is an ethnic Chinese Malaysian while her mother is Taiwanese.

I have many favorite songs.

First, one of my favourite Chinese-speaking modern singers is Mavis Fan (范曉萱). She once used to sing Children's songs and then took a turn for a more various repertoire but as you are about to hear (or might already know), she sometimes keeps a close relationship with her "origins" :

范曉萱 - 馬戲團 (I am particularly fond of the half-tragic half-cute lyrics coupled with her cute singing)

范曉萱 - 我要我們在一起

Older but still good as plunging into a hotspring when it's freezing cold : 李建復

李建復 - 歸去來兮

李建復 - 龍的傳人 (some people might call it old-fashioned :D )

Another old one:

羅大佑 - 鄉愁四韻

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RziRflBfiJw (it might be useful to say that the lyrics are written by famous poet 余光中)

Faye Wong (王菲), she is not to introduce anymore, just, here are my favourite two songs by her :

王菲 - 百年孤寂

王菲 - 開到荼蘼

F.I.R. I Have nothing particularly relevant to say but I like:

F.I.R. - Lydia

F.I.R. - 月牙灣

And to finish this post, I read in the title that Cantonese was allowed in the topic, I hope that aboriginal languages from Taiwan are also because they seriously have good stuff:

Kipahpah ima (拍手歌, Let's Clap Together), from the Bunun tribe if I'm not mistaken. I recommend this above all the rest:

南王姊妹花&巴力瓦格斯 - 美麗的稻穗, a classic among the Taiwanese aboriginal songs, Puyuma tribe :

紀曉君 Samingad - 野火 (some people don't like but i'm in love with her voice), Puyuma tribe too :

But actually it's to say that I like old stuff the most, sometimes sung in Taiwanese/Hokkien:

潘越雲 - 純情青春夢

Hope you enjoy :D

I've been watching early Ariel Lins for clips to add to my YouTube channel, Kobo's Cantonese Corner when I came across this song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnCplEPTHUI

The song comes in 30 seconds into the clip.

The beginning sounds very like a Paul McCartney. The fuzz guitar solo is also very familiar as does other bits and pieces. Quite enjoyable. So enjoyable that I sought out the title and artist.

It's by Taiwanese 張震嶽

So without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, 張震嶽 singing 失去.

And, yes, ladies, he's an aborigine.  :)

Funny, but it sounds better in the Ariel Lin clip.

And she's so young then. So adorable!   :)

@Leiya: in the 2nd one you pronounce 的 "de", I thought in songs it was pronounced "di" usually?

Mandarin: 早安晨之美 by 卢广仲

the chorus just goes '对呀对呀对呀...‘ XD

Cantonese: 海阔天空 by Beyond

the unofficial anthem for hongkong pro-democracy protests. (Cantos would be impressed if you can sing this!)
