Kev Posted September 29, 2013 at 02:46 AM Report Share Posted September 29, 2013 at 02:46 AM Can anyone suggest a good translation for 抽风病? Hyperventilation doesn't seem right and doesn't seem to convey the idea of sickness/pathology or chronic nature of possible recurrence. I've found that none of these is right: Bronchitis 支气管炎 Emphysema 肺气肿 Asthma 气喘﹔哮喘 Hyperventilation 过度换气
muyongshi Posted September 29, 2013 at 02:58 AM Report Share Posted September 29, 2013 at 02:58 AM Doesn't it have to do with convulsions or spasms? Perhaps a form of turrets (not sure of spelling).

Kev Posted September 29, 2013 at 04:13 AM Author Report Share Posted September 29, 2013 at 04:13 AM I presume you're talking about the spelling of Tourette's not that Tourettes is "抽风病"? Because if you google for Tourettes "抽风病" you only gets 3 hits. google for "图雷特氏" tourettes gets 87,000 hits google for "图雷特氏" "抽风病 gets 0 hits Search goes on. muyongshi Posted September 29, 2013 at 04:31 AM Report Share Posted September 29, 2013 at 04:31 AM Thank for the spelling- I suck at spelling French words. In regards to google, my specific thought is that Tourette's is a "Western" discovery so if course the translation will be phonetic. That is why I said some "form" of Tourette's based on it being neurological and involving spasms. It's could be a colloquial usage referring to a non-medical diagnosis of things like Tourette's. I'm not a doctor so I do t know, I'm just offering a thought of a possibility.
muyongshi Posted September 29, 2013 at 04:36 AM Report Share Posted September 29, 2013 at 04:36 AM I'm basing my speculation off of this definition from 规范大词典. 抽风 [动] 中枢神经系统受刺激,引起肌肉痉挛、口眼歪斜等
