metlx Posted October 10, 2013 at 03:06 PM Report Share Posted October 10, 2013 at 03:06 PM A conversation goes like this: ... A: 对这儿生活习惯了吗? B: 差不多已经习惯了,不过有的地方还不太习惯。 A: 什么地方不习惯? B: 我每天早上都不能吃早饭 ... What does 地方 mean in "不过有的地方还不太习惯"sentence? I thought it meant 'region/place/room/area', but that doesn't make sense in the above sentence. If I try to translate it: 差不多已经习惯了,不过有的地方还不太习惯。 "I've already almost got used to it (life), only the place i'm not yet too used to." This wouldn't be so weird, if B's next answer "我每天早上都不能吃早饭" wasn't completely unrelated to 地方。
Michaelyus Posted October 10, 2013 at 03:16 PM Report Share Posted October 10, 2013 at 03:16 PM 地方 can often be thought of as "locations/parts/arenas of one's life" and is quite often used in this way when talking about livelihood or customs, more so than "东西" which I'd consider an error, or 点 which I'd think of as adding a slightly literary or even polemic flavour (which I personally don't consider an error!). You can think of 地方 as "aspect", although in colloquial English, people would probably say "things" I suppose.
renzhe Posted October 10, 2013 at 03:29 PM Report Share Posted October 10, 2013 at 03:29 PM Yeah, think of it as having a more abstract meaning here, more "parts" than "places". There are still problems "in some places" or "in some parts", and it does not refer to physical places, but some parts of your life.
陳德聰 Posted October 10, 2013 at 04:59 PM Report Share Posted October 10, 2013 at 04:59 PM Here I understand it as "方面", as Michaelyus states "aspect".
lingo-ling Posted October 11, 2013 at 08:49 AM Report Share Posted October 11, 2013 at 08:49 AM parts, aspects, things, areas (in an abstract sense) 不过有的地方还不太习惯 But there are some areas I'm not quite used to yet.
