Fsci123 Posted October 11, 2013 at 02:37 AM Report Share Posted October 11, 2013 at 02:37 AM Hi everybody i am looking to translate two things: In English we have a phrase: cha-ching. I am looking to translate that phonetically. I am working on a piece of fiction that involves a city named Wō. The closest phonetic translation ive gotten is 窝. Would this be acceptable in city naming in chinese?
New Members tblwbob1 Posted October 16, 2013 at 09:16 AM New Members Report Share Posted October 16, 2013 at 09:16 AM 1. Unfortunately, as far as I know, there is no phonetically translation for cha-ching. In Chinese, a word "叮"(Ding)is sometimes used when describing the sound of a cashier. 2. There is no “窝” in Chinese cities' name. But in some towns and counties' naming, it is acceptable, such as 地卧堡, 张家窝,etc. One thing to notice, 窝 is seldom the first character of a name. lingo-ling Posted October 16, 2013 at 10:41 AM Report Share Posted October 16, 2013 at 10:41 AM I remember years ago there was a story in which a character loved "叮叮噹噹響的洋錢". ding-ding-dang-dang xiang de yang qian ("ding ding dong dong sounded foreign money" = jingling foreign money). But it's not equivalent to "ka-ching"! The Chinese may be more apt to say "發財了" when we say "ka-ching"! As for Wo, it's odd to have a one-character place name. 窩 means "nest", 臥 means "recline". You could call it 臥龍 (wolong - reclining dragon, not an uncommon place name), How about 龍窩 (longwo - dragon's nest)?

The closest phonetic translation ive gotten is 窝. Would this be acceptable in city naming in chinese? Is the name fixed/a central part of the story? If not, you might be better off stating your requirements for a name (beyond just a single syllable) and have others give suggestions.
