Shelley Posted October 20, 2013 at 04:18 PM Report Share Posted October 20, 2013 at 04:18 PM Hmmmm a teacher discouraging a student from acquiring knowledge. Not sure I understand, I have not been aware that courses have rules about where you can get information from, this is new to me. Surely if your work is wrong your teacher will give you less marks and the student loses out from choosing the wrong sources and maybe learns to pick more carefully. it wasn't like he just asked us to do his homework for him, he asked some sensible questions and then submitted what he had done so far for help. I have done evening classes at our local university and other learning methods and I have never been told where I can not learn from. I have toyed with doing an open university course in chinese but now ..........well not so sure I will consider it. I hope the OP does well and good luck to him.
陳德聰 Posted October 20, 2013 at 04:22 PM Report Share Posted October 20, 2013 at 04:22 PM There would have been nothing wrong with OP asking how to link certain sentences together, but when he posted what he had so far, this was akin to getting someone to do his homework assignment for him. I think we all were careful in our responses not to do it for him, but in academic writing courses I have taken, if I posted my work online and asked for people to edit it, this would be considered academic dishonesty by my institution... Either way, I don't think OP needed to remove ALL his posts, just the one he posted immediately before Big Brother arrived.
kanqian Posted October 20, 2013 at 07:01 PM Report Share Posted October 20, 2013 at 07:01 PM I agree with Dominc in that so long as one asks the right question, forums are great places to share learning strategies and resources. What I meant by 'not to your benefit to ask for help on a public forum' refers to the manner he asked for help because he put the whole assignment in his first post (he later took it out after we sent out a group email) and sought help in that manner. It is because potentially someone on the forum could have provided him with the complete answer. I do not wish to play the 'big brother' role. I only stepped in the second time he did it because I was concerned about him running the risk of breaching the code of conduct. As I explained, if he waits to learn all the lessons in the next 6 weeks, he will have learnt how to say the things he is asked to say. Surely, that is much better for him than getting answers now before he has done the learning. Our course only started 2 weeks ago and this assignment is not due until 28th November.
Shelley Posted October 20, 2013 at 09:49 PM Report Share Posted October 20, 2013 at 09:49 PM Thank you kanqian for taking the time to explain this. If the course is only 2 weeks in and the assignment is not due till Nov. 28 there is plenty of time and lessons to learn and understand thoroughly. I get the impression (from one of his earlier post) that the OP thinks he will have to "guess" the information that he needs, maybe he needs to know that he will be taught what he needs as the course progresses. I hope the OP does well for the rest of the course.
