Hi everybody,

Can someone please tell me the meaning of the structure yi (一) + adjective? For example: 一慢

I guess it means "slowed down a bit" but I'm not sure.

I'm sorry if this question has been asked before but I've googled and couldn't find a question similar to it on this website.

Thank you very much.

Thank you for replying.

I know the meaning of the yi ... + jiu ... structure. What has been confusing me is the yi + adj without the jiu and without anything between them. For example, the following sentence:

中秋国庆凑都一快,大家都上哪里玩啊

I have consulted some grammar books but so far no luck.

If I had to guess, I'd say it looks like a spelling mistake and should be instead:

中秋国庆凑到一块,大家都上哪里玩啊

So the writer meant to write coudaoyikuai, but accidentally typed coudouyikuai and the automatic sentence completion of the IME just filled in words that matched the incorrect pinyin.

Hi imron,

Thanks for your previous answer.

Can you please tell me the grammatical function/meaning of "yi" in the following sentence?

他先是一呆但马上就回过神来

一 in front of a verb can be used to indicate something that happened suddenly, briefly, or unexpectedly, which to me is how I read this.

[something happened and] he was startled, but then instantly regained his composure.

You will never find this structure in any of our grammar book, this is completely oral chinese. For example

"这辆车一慢就起不来了".

for your sentence 他先是一呆但马上就回过神来, means he shock a little, and come back as normal.

here ”一“ just emphasis the time (he got shock) is short.

such as “一块” just means get together... the other like 一起, that sentence can also been said 中秋国庆凑到一起,大家都上哪里玩啊. that mean compeletly the same

The OP probably means 一 <verb>. Roughly it can be translated as "as..." e.g. 我一進來他就暈倒了. "As I came in he fainted."

lev landau's first example uses 一 in a word, such as 一起, 一塊.

lev landau's second example I'm not sure about but seems to use 一 to nominalize the stative verb/adjective 呆.
