Hello. I am looking for help reading the tang of a Japanese-style sword. I can only make out what I believe is the date (year of the dog?), but really would like to know the maker's name and town. Whatever you could tell me would be helpful. Thank you.

It appears to be 處X住人蔣氏 丙戌年. I can't read the second character. The name mentioned is someone called 蔣 (Jiang).  The year is Bingxu, which is the year of the dog.

I think the second character might be an obsolete kana not selected for standardisation.

A thought cameto me about the as-yet-unidentified character... could it be a highly stylized calligraphic version of 龍 (meaning dragon)? The name of the sword could be 處龍 (area/home of the dragon or maybe dragon of the area would be a better translation?).

EDIT: Here's a picture a quick Google search gave to show an example why I think it's possible it's 龍

Yes..the 2nd character is 龍,
They tried to make it look likes a dragon with long body.
The longest stoke look like a snake, But dragon was meally Snake plus Feet.
Different peole express 龍 in different ways.
Hes is one  (龙草书书法字典)
