flowertea Posted December 25, 2013 at 08:24 AM Report Posted December 25, 2013 at 08:24 AM Hi, are you watching our famous story《西游记》(Journey to the west)? The interesting words seem to be from the monk of monkey. Chinese people speak 喝酒 when they drink write liquor or alcohol. They put them into traditional jars or pots in old times. We call them 酒壶。So you can imagine what you will feel if you drink all write liquor in a whole pot. It’s so difficult unless you can drink a lot. And people also use the word 吃 instead of 喝 in this case, because sometimes people will eat some things when they drink, otherwise the their stomachs will be painful. So 喝上一壶or 吃上一壶 means tough, difficult to deal with or unbearable. There is another short word够呛gòuqiàng to describe the same thing, because 够means enough, and 呛means to choke (because of swallowing the wrong way). A whole bottle of write liquor is really enough and may make you choke, haha! We can say like this:单单这五大战王就绝对够你一呛。 Quote
