hoshinoumi Posted December 16, 2013 at 11:21 AM Report Posted December 16, 2013 at 11:21 AM I´m back once more with Boya Chinese´s lovely grammar explanations. The English explanations are extremely confusing. -------------------------------------------------------------------- V 上 表示动作后某物附着在另外的东西上。(When 上 is used after a verb, it indicates that something is attached to another thing after the action). 你怎么把点话挂上了? 我还没说完呢? 戴上帽子,跟我走。 写上你的名字。 ------------------------------------------------------------------ That is the explanation and examples from the book. To make it clear: 1. I understand the examples, but I´d like to know what kind of 上 is this one (is it directional complement? result complement?I know there are many kinds and I´m always confused) 2. I dont think it is a directional complement, as the verb could only be 来, 去, 会, 走. Am I right deducting this? 3. Regardless of the kind of 上, focusing on the practical aspects. Can I use this construction with any verb I like to modify the object or is it more like a phrasal verb in English, where you can only use "on" or "up" with certain verbs? Thank you for your help Quote
Michaelyus Posted December 16, 2013 at 03:51 PM Report Posted December 16, 2013 at 03:51 PM Complement of result (结果补语); and it's safest to see them [and to learn them] as phrasal verbs in English / verbs with prefixes in German. 会 and 走 are also resultative complements too in most classifications. 1 Quote

flowertea Posted December 18, 2013 at 07:27 AM Report Posted December 18, 2013 at 07:27 AM What a coincidence! I just taught one of my students this point of V+上 . Hope the followings will be useful. We use the book Chinese made easier (book 4), which is quite helpful. V+上 --- resultative verb 1. Upon, on (but not necessarily in an upwards direction; it emphasizes the result.) 他很生气地挂上了电话。Hang up 请把门窗关上。Close up 外面特别冷,把帽子戴上吧。Put on 大卫也要去,我们应该在名单上加上他的名字。 Add on 2. 上 used with a more abstract, idiomatic meaning (often having the idea of “attainment” of one’s goal) 他们家很高兴,因为他考上了名牌大学。(pass the exam) 我没赶上飞机。(fail in catching up with the plane) 他被选上当我们班的班长。(be chosen) 3. Approve of , satisfied with, give mental assent to (according to my criterion of what is suitable or appropriate) 他慢慢地爱上了这份工作。(Gradually approve of ,satisfied with) 那个姑娘很快就爱上了他。(Fall in love with, quickly in this sentence) 我在商场看上了一件红色大衣。(satisfied with, according to my criterion of what is suitable or appropriate) 4 Quote
