Hi

Just passing Unit 8 in Pimsleur and found that they use jiu diàn 酒店 for a hotel. Is this correct, or is lu guan 旅馆 more correct?

They both mean hotel. In Cantonese I'd automatically call a hotel a 酒店, but generally I think it's just a case of personal preference.

Hi Gerald

Just thought that jiu diàn 酒店 was more a "wine shop / pub (public house)"

but I am very new in chinese, so nice learn that both can be used.

Thanks

Hi Trevelyan

Using your Adsotrans brings up 旅馆 first :D and 酒店 second.

Technique, I know, but fun

酒店 I think is fine translated as hotel

旅馆 is generally cheaper, and here in Beijing I think they're often geared to cheap / dorm accomodation for people working here. I think originally they would have been more like an inn or guesthouse - cheap basic accomodation.

So while we're at it: how do 饭店 and 宾馆 fit into the picture?

And does anybody know a book that reliably explains these words? Last time in Wangfujing bookstore, I had a look at some of these 近意 dictionaries (I think that's what they were called), but I found them all rather limited. Any suggestions?

Both 酒店, 飯店, and 賓館 can mean hotel, including luxury one.

北京飯店 is one of the oldest and most famous hotels in beijing,

and 白天鵝賓館 was actually a fairly luxuary hotel in Canton too.

But it seems the rule of hongkong has influenced china now.

New hotel, esp luxury hotel is called 酒店.

賓館 and 旅館 refers to motels.

And 飯店 is rarely used today for newly established hotel.

my personal experience is that there's no actual rule to

distinguish the quality of hotels just by their names.

The best way is to look and see.
