skylee Posted December 22, 2003 at 11:26 PM Report Posted December 22, 2003 at 11:26 PM Ian, that applies to Taiwan singers/actors too. Whenever they say "We Chinese", I always wonder if they support Taiwan independence. It seems if they do, they risk losing a very big market. Quote
Ian_Lee Posted December 23, 2003 at 01:09 AM Report Posted December 23, 2003 at 01:09 AM Skylee: When Ah Mei spoke to the audience in Mainland as "Chinese", she probably meant that she is a Chinese national of aboriginal nativity from Taiwan, ROC while those audience thought that she meant she is a Chinese from the province of Taiwan, PRC. As long as both sides don't dwell further on the topic, there is absolutely no conflict. Quote

The ambiguity helps lessen the tension. The reason why ppl on the mainland think AMei meant PRC is because they are educated to believe that there is no more ROC, or that it ended in 1949. That's the impression I get. When I watch CCTV4, they always blot out the ROC flag or symbols with pixels when they show footage of Taiwan. Quote
smithsgj Posted December 24, 2003 at 07:34 AM Author Report Posted December 24, 2003 at 07:34 AM The reason "there is absolutely no conflict" is because the population of China is being tricked and misled by its government. Is this basically what you're saying A_F? I think I'd go along with that. Quote

Well, it's all really subjective and depends on who you are really. It's like anything else in life and politics. But isn't it the same thing in Taiwan? The mainland is not referred to as the PRC but as the 中共 ('Zhong Gong' - the Chinese Communists) in the media. Quote
