hoally Posted March 31, 2005 at 01:59 AM Report Posted March 31, 2005 at 01:59 AM Does anyone know what the superstitions are around the 7th month of the Lunar calendar, typically known as the Ghost Month? Is it bad luck to have a wedding during this time? My fiance and I are trying to pick a date for our wedding next year, and we would like it on August 26, which is the anniversary of the day we first started going out. Based on some online Chinese calendars, next year 2006, there will be a leap month for the 7th month. So August 26 lands on the 3rd day of the leap month. Is this still considered the ghost month? Is it taboo to have a wedding during this time? I'm not that superstitious myself, but I just want to make sure not to "jinx" my marriage by having the wedding during an unlucky time of the year. Also, I need to appease my parents and the more traditional elders in my family. Quote
xiaoxiajenny Posted March 31, 2005 at 06:03 AM Report Posted March 31, 2005 at 06:03 AM Maybe you need to check the 黄历 to find a lucky day. Quote
skylee Posted March 31, 2005 at 06:19 AM Report Posted March 31, 2005 at 06:19 AM Perhaps you could use tools like this for reference -> http://mindcity.sina.com.hk/MC-lunar/daily/2006/08/20060826_b5.html
hoally Posted March 31, 2005 at 06:26 PM Author Report Posted March 31, 2005 at 06:26 PM Thanks for the pointer to the tool, but I don't read Chinese. I attended a few years of Chinese school when I was a kid, but don't remember any of it. Can someone help me translate or is there a reference to an english version? Quote
gato Posted March 31, 2005 at 06:36 PM Report Posted March 31, 2005 at 06:36 PM No offense, but if you don't read Chinese any more, why even care about these old Chinese superstitions? There's no such thing as unlucky days. Just have a good time and don't stress. Quote
hoally Posted March 31, 2005 at 07:22 PM Author Report Posted March 31, 2005 at 07:22 PM Neither I nor my fiance care that much about these superstitions. It's mainly for my parents and older siblings who are more traditional and want to make sure I don't pick an unlucky date. Quote
azarpo Posted April 21, 2005 at 12:42 AM Report Posted April 21, 2005 at 12:42 AM Hi, So - my fiancee and I are in the same exact boat, and looking at Aug 26 2006 as well. Would somebody on this site who can read Chinese or who has the resources please look at this dat? I'd be most appreciative, as I'm sure the lady who orignially posted this question would be... Thanks much!! Quote
jadegurl Posted August 2, 2005 at 04:57 PM Report Posted August 2, 2005 at 04:57 PM If you still need help translating, basically, it says 8/26/06 is NOT good for wedding, putting up new doors, burial services etc. I'm in the same boat...I chose a date for next feb, and have booked a church and restaurant already, now my mom wants me to check it against the lunar calendar and I found it's not a good day for wedding...I'm not too sure what to do...my bf and I are both christians, we probably shouldn't care about these things, but how do I convince my family is a big challenge...(sigh).... aanda13 Posted October 26, 2005 at 04:59 AM Report Posted October 26, 2005 at 04:59 AM My fiance and I are also Christian, but my mother is adamant about making sure I don't pick an unlucky date. I really don't believe in this superstitious stuff, but I need my mother's support nonetheless and she will believe my marriage is doomed unless I pick a proper date. So, I'm in the US, and she called a friend in HK to pick a summer date. Saturday, August 12, 2006 is supposedly okay for those who are worried about August 26. But, you might want to double check. I don't know whether these dates depend on any other factors regarding the couple. Quote
Lu Posted October 31, 2005 at 03:08 PM Report Posted October 31, 2005 at 03:08 PM Can't you find another fortune teller to tell your family that according to some factors that the first one didn't take into account, it actually is not such a bad day? Quote
