Stephen Ford Posted December 25, 2013 at 10:21 PM Report Share Posted December 25, 2013 at 10:21 PM Hello, I'm an American college student who is going to be studying at 北大 next month, and I'm trying to choose my Chinese name. In class I was given 付然, which is okay, but I really want to pick an auspicious name which has meaning to me, and also fits with the astrological, numerological, and feng shui beliefs. It's a lot to try and figure out!! One thing I know is that I want to have 星 as part of my name, I love the sound of it and the imagery of 日 and 生 together meaning star. I came up with 星子, 星儿, and 星尘, but when I asked my Chinese friend she said that some of those would sound weird. Now I really like 星火, but I'm afraid that will sound too much like Martian. I was hoping someone would have some good ideas for names with 星, or else they could tell me what types of characters I would use to create the rest of my name? 谢谢! stoney Posted December 26, 2013 at 04:50 AM Report Share Posted December 26, 2013 at 04:50 AM It's very common for Chinese students to have weird English names, so why not do the same with a Chinese name.
skylee Posted December 27, 2013 at 01:27 AM Report Share Posted December 27, 2013 at 01:27 AM 星 is OK in a name. The famous actor Stephen Chow has 星 in his name (his name 星馳 is based on a poem). PS - There is an actress (but she has retired) in South Korea with the name 銀河. This name is weird in Chinese but she carries it well. PPS - Take a look -> http://www.7mingwang.com/cn-ming-zia-%E6%98%9F-xb-1-zs-0/ I think 星朗 and 星宇 are pretty nice.
泊秦淮 Posted December 27, 2013 at 03:02 AM Report Share Posted December 27, 2013 at 03:02 AM What about 星原?原 is "prairie", this character itself means spacious .This is extracted from one of Mao's most famous saying:"星星之火,可以燎原" (Even the tiniest sparkle has the ability to burn down the whole prairie.).In this sentence, 星 doesn't mean stars, means "火星、火花", that is "sparkle". Means no matter what your situation is, you shall not lose faith in yourself. Cause you'll have a very promising future to unfold. It is a very auspicious name. lingo-ling Posted December 27, 2013 at 12:21 PM Report Share Posted December 27, 2013 at 12:21 PM I think you mean "spark", not "sparkle".
Lu Posted December 27, 2013 at 04:30 PM Report Share Posted December 27, 2013 at 04:30 PM I once had a coworker named 星尘, she was a native speaker, but it was still a strange name. Her English name was Stardust (of course). 星子 sounds strange to me as a name, and 星儿 can't be a name I think, at most it could be what your parents call you for short. Of the names suggested, I like 星宇 and 星原. 银河 is also the name of 李银河, the famous sexuologist, but she's a woman as well so it might not be too suitable a name for a man.
