Fsci123 Posted December 27, 2013 at 11:15 PM Report Posted December 27, 2013 at 11:15 PM Hi everybody. Recently ive been using this Chinese character(單) to represent my name(Dan). Im pretty sure it is pronounced in mandarin "Tan" but i like the meaning "single, lone, by itself". Is this logical? Is it possible to use any symbol with similar pronunciation for name or is their some special rule? Thanks Quote
Lu Posted December 29, 2013 at 12:35 PM Report Posted December 29, 2013 at 12:35 PM or is their some special rule Usually people pick a character (or two) that have a nice or auspicious meaning. 单 therefore would be a strange choice for a name, but consider 丹: also pronouced dān, means 'red' and is often used for names. Can be used for both men and women and combined with all kinds of surnames. So, the next question: what would you like your surname to sound like? 2 Quote
anonymoose Posted December 29, 2013 at 02:52 PM Report Posted December 29, 2013 at 02:52 PM 單 is a common family name, but it is pronounced shàn. 2 Quote

Lu Posted January 1, 2014 at 09:07 PM Report Posted January 1, 2014 at 09:07 PM Not very imo. I had to look it up, apparently it's archaic, which means you'll have to spell and explain it to virtually everyone who asks for your name. That gets old very fast. What do you need this name for? Are you planning to go to China, or is it for a tattoo, or something else? 1 Quote
Fsci123 Posted January 1, 2014 at 09:18 PM Author Report Posted January 1, 2014 at 09:18 PM I do a lot of 3d printing and i was planning to use a one of these symbols as logo/signature of sorts. I just dont want to make like a thousand models with this character and find out that they symbol i was using is wrong or profane, which is something that happens to hundreds of Americans. Quote
Lu Posted January 2, 2014 at 09:40 AM Report Posted January 2, 2014 at 09:40 AM Correct me if I'm wrong, but I get the impression that you or your company don't really have a strong connection to China or Chinese. In that case, why not just get a regular logo? Or call your company 4D or something, 3D's of printing and one for your name. 1 Quote
Fsci123 Posted January 2, 2014 at 04:45 PM Author Report Posted January 2, 2014 at 04:45 PM For the same reason most people in my country get Chinese tattoos... It looks exotic and attractive and it draws peoples attention. Plus making a signature/logo in English looks slightly tacky... Quote
Lu Posted January 2, 2014 at 08:31 PM Report Posted January 2, 2014 at 08:31 PM Ok, well good luck then. I wonder what country that is where most people have tattoos, and of Chinese characters no less. Personally, I find it weird that having a logo in your own language is considered tacky, I'd find it a lot more tacky to have a logo in a language you neither know nor understand just because it supposedly looks cool. Perhaps consider getting a designer who knows Chinese to design your logo for you, that way you might end up with something suitable. 1 Quote
