Dear all Chinese -Forums.com members,

This is Katrina Lee. I'm a Mandarin teacher teaching Mandarin for about 3.5 years.

In order to get my teaching skill to another level, I've recently taken the next step for my Chinese lessons.

I'm doing video, audio lessons as well as Chinese Weekly Learning Tips now.

I know there have been so many good Mandarin teachers are doing their free lessons online already, but I would

appreciate different opinions, prospectives from people everywhere.

I would like my online lessons on Youtube interesting, helpful and practical as well.

I've been doing "Merry Christmas" "Pick-up line in Chinese Part 1" and "Happy New Year" videos so far.

If you are interested, you're welcome to go to my Youtube channel "Mandarin SMART" or go to my profile for my webpage link.

If yoy are not interested, pls ingore this post.

I would like to know what topics would people be interested to learn!

Your advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much!!

謝謝 / 新年快樂! (Traditional)

谢谢 / 新年快乐! (Simplified)

Katrina Lee :)

Katrina, you may want to put your website in your signature so we can get to it more easily.

Happy holidays. Eat some 汤圆 for us all.

Okay, I'm watching the video. Jefflau is correct: The pinyin in brackets is difficult to read. If it's hard to put pinyin directly over the characters, that's okay. You can still write something like:

小姐,我可以跟你做朋友嗎?好不好?

小姐,我可以跟你做朋友吗?好不好?

xiăo jiĕ , wŏ kĕ yĭ gēn nĭ zuò péng you3 ma? hăo bù hăo?

"Miss, would you like to be friends with me?" [Optional]

Literal: "Miss, I can with you make friend (question particle)? Good not good?" [Optional]

The above format would still save you some screen space as you wouldn't have to write the pinyin and all those brackets twice.

It's your choice on the English and the Literal translation because you explain things in the video anyhow.

Dear Chinese-forums.com members,

My name is Katrina Lee, I'm a Mandarin teacher in Taiwan.

I'm having a Youtube channel teaching people survival Mandarin.

It's Taiwanese style and usage for people who are interested in

working, living, and learning Mandarin in Taiwan.  :)

It seems a bit of a disappointment to have lessons in Taiwanese style and usage of Mandarin and not to have Traditional characters. Maybe you can fit both versions, as in some of the lessons? Other than that the lessons seemed very enjoyable, very interesting and energetic presentation!

I've learned some new stuff watching your videos.

For instance, from watching your "Merry Christmas in Chinese" video. I never knew that Santa Claus was also 聖誕老公公(圣诞老公公).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2n7kkEQERcI

I always knew him as 聖誕老人(圣诞老人).

Is this a mainland/Taiwan difference? Kind of like in America he's Santa Claus, but, in Britain he's Father Christmas?  :)

Or is it common among all Mandarin Chinese?

While searching I also discovered that he's also known as 耶誕老人(耶诞老人) and that Christmas is also known as 耶誕節(聖诞節).

https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&biw=1366&bih=599&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1366&bih=599&q=耶誕老人

You learn something new every day.  :)

I'd like to hear more about differences in the way Mandarin is used between the Taiwan Strait. Vocabulary that is glaringly mainland. Maybe stuff that might have been introduced from communism and would sound funny on Taiwan or even on Hong Kong and Macau. Such as "comrade", "proletariat", "bourgeois", "department of propaganda", etc.

Keep at it and "jia you".   ;-)

Kobo.

Hi !

To freipole :  Thank you for your kindly suggestion, I've been thinking about using traditional characters on my videos.

Since simplified is more popular then traditional. But I think it's time to put traditional characters on all of my future videos from now on! :)  Thank you for your comment.

To Kobo-Daishi :

Thank you for watching my videos! ;)

And yes, in Taiwan, we can say 聖誕老人 or 聖誕老公公 as Santa Claus. We use both, and it's common among all Mandarin Chinese. :)

There's no particular reason that I used 聖誕老公公 in my video, it was the first thing pop up in my head when I want to say Santa in Chinese, and I hear 聖誕老公公 more often here in Taiwan as a native speaker.

And to answer your question about 耶誕節 & 聖誕節.  耶誕節 is also Christmas, but i see this saying more than I hear this saying, which means... I see 耶誕節 more on a written form here in my country (Taiwan). And when speaking, we say 聖誕節 more than 耶誕節 :)

耶誕節 we hear usually from the news or see the words on Christmas cards.  :)

Thank you for the suggestions for my future videos!

I'll keep it up! :)

Katrina
