Tianjin42 Posted January 12, 2014 at 07:02 AM Report Posted January 12, 2014 at 07:02 AM Okay, finally got around to properly going through one of these. Again, thanks. My method is to watch through without looking at the subtitles. Then watch through with subtitles before watching a third time and stopping where required. I found that this was tricky without subtitles – more difficult than usual in fact. I live in Beijing so the accent shouldn’t be a major issue – it just seemed the speed and delivery made it quite difficult to pick up the words. Also, apart from learning that this particular actor doesn’t have much of a golf swing, I was interested in how he used 麻. After shooting the gun 连手都麻了. I would probably translate this as something like “Even my hands were tingling”. I do understand麻but haven’t encountered it much so it is useful to see it in context. A question from 25:15. The father explains that the people at the club 都是来自中下阶层的人. Here I am not entirely sure about word division. Is he saying “all of those people were from a lower social stratum than you” or is the 下 here implying simply lower class? Also above it seems there is some confusion with 延. Not sure here - my feeling is that in the sentence 他们共同延用了一个特点, the father is explaining that these types of people have in common that they remain narrow-minded (the 特点 in question) . Feel free to clear this up as I am not 100% on that one. Quote

I do understand麻but haven’t encountered it much so it is useful to see it in context. Probably better translated as "numb" in this context. 1 Quote
StChris Posted January 14, 2014 at 11:34 AM Author Report Posted January 14, 2014 at 11:34 AM Hi. Glad you're all getting something out of these. I would translate 都是来自中下阶层的人 as "people from the lower middle-class". Quote
