How much does a 10K RMB/mo salary get you in Shanghai?

Recommended Posts

Here is an interesting post I found saw on Weixin.  Shows you how far 10,000 RMB per month gets you in Shanghai.  10K per month is a decent salary for a lot of young Chinese in the work force.  Someone fresh out of college won't even be making this.  Sorry, all in Chinese.

个税=385元

Housing is the big variable. In case you were wondering, like me, what "上只角" meant (it's basically the city center area):

http://wapbaike.baidu.com/view/4586219.htm?adapt=1&

What does 交友费用 involve? If you occasionally do things like eat a nice meal with friends (60rmb) or watch a movie with them (25rmb) then you'll be far short of the quoted 600rmb.

Good point.  A lot of the younger Chinese in Shanghai end up having roommates.  For example, my wife lived with 3 girls she graduated university with until she was in her late 20's.  This cut down on her monthly housing fee.  I also didn't know the meaning of 上只角 (my wife informed me of the meaning as i was reading it), but good find as to the detail.  I'd say the prices anywhere within Shanghai 内环 (inner ring road) are going to be similar to these prices or higher.

Also, the above from a housing perspective is usually only applicable to the 外地人 (non-Shanghainese).  The Shanghainese normally live with their parents until they get married, and at the point they get married the parents will normally support buying a house for them to live in to start a family.  A lot of Shanghainese have money from the economical boom in Shanghai.  A lot were displaced from their original homes due to development projects, which resulted in the government giving the families money or new houses.  Others made good investments back when.

Translated (by me, corrections welcome, where i was unsure is marked with ???).

A lot of people ask questions about cost of living and it’s interesting to look at it from a Chinese person’s analysis.

------

What lifestyle can you afford on a monthly salary of 10,000 in Shanghai?

From the point of view of someone who doesn't have a house or a car, what kind of lifestyle can you have in Shanghai?

Let us do a bit of calculation below:

Before tax, 10,000 yuan.

Senior citizen care 8%=800 yuan, medical 2% = 200 yuan

Unemployment 1%=100 yuan, savings fund (????) 7%=700 yuan

Individual tax deduction 3500yuan

Individual tax 385yuan

Actual nett =10000-1800-387=7815

(friends, family, still take note ???)

Apartment rent: Not in city center, ordinary 1 bedroom apartment beside the subway.  2500 yuan / month

7815-2500=5315 yuan

(can consult with those with home loans ???)

Water/electric/heat/internet/TV 300 yuan

5315-300=5015 yuan

(Compulsory living expenses)

Other than swimming across the Huangpu river, or walking…

4 yuan (subway) *2 (return) * 22 days = 176 yuan

Fortunately, after 70 yuan a month, the subway gives a 10% discount

70+86*0.9=147.4 yuan
Occasionally arrive late or do overtime so go by taxi 100 yuan
5015-147.4-100=4767.6 yuan

(Transport costs are also not cheap)

Breakfast 5元
Lunch 20元
Dinner 20元
No snacks, afternoon tea, dim-sum…
45 yuan *22天=900 yuan
4767.6-900=3867.6 yuan

(one’s wallet has already lost a fold…)

Daily necessities:toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, tampons/pads……

Not including makeup!  No skincare!  No haircuts!
Risk turning into a haggard old woman – you only need 100 yuan a month.

(搿些还是小case~~)(@tysond – no idea what this means)

Clothing, shoes, underpants, bags.  No seasonal products.

Make a beeline to the discount stores, for 500 yuan you can only afford to buy in these places…
3767.6-500=3267.6 yuan

(isn’t it like this? !)

Phone fee::100 yuan
3267.6-100=3167.6

Social expenses: No girlfriend 600 yuan,girlfriend 1200 yuan,take the average of 900 yuan。
3167.6-900=2267.6 yuan

(what is remaining is not even a third...)

Every two months, some friend from class gets married or has a kid, etc, average it at 300 a month.

Give parents 500 yuan, short trips home average out at 150 a month. Still left with 1317.6 yuan!

Of course, this is based on a man who doesn't smoke, drink, or go to clubs or bars.

Or a woman who doesn't wear makeup or use skincare or do her hair.

(in this life, hardships must be suffered)

Well this is discussing 10,000 CNY before tax and insurances, including the employer contributions to the insurance funds, which is actually the real cost an employee is to a person, however usually when people talk about their salary, they will not include insurance payments by the employer to the government. So the person you are talking about above would say they earn about 8,000 CNY, not 10,000.

That is still more than a fresh university graduate will make, however someone with a few years of experience and management responsibility probably will.

A technical point. However, over all the guy is right, costs are too high for salaries paid. The main problem in my opinion is the huge cost of housing and rental, which you do not only experience in your own rent, but also in the cost of anything else you buy, as shops, companies etc. have to pay rent and that is what mainly increases prices.

A limited amount of space in those few cities that everyone wants to live in (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou), means little space for almost unlimited amounts of people who want it. It will not change until just not so many people want to come to those main cities.

Hmmm, my employer did not deduct *my* payments to insurance to my agreed salary - those are deductions from my salary.

So if they say 10,000, it's 10,000 before deductions on my side.

On top of those deductions from the employee side, there are separate and much higher insurance costs that the employer has to pay on top of these ones.  So it's probably more like the employer paying 14,000 to give an agreed salary of 10,000, of which the employee takes home 8,000.

Note that there are quite a lot of benefits in most jobs in China.  Annual trip, health checkups, etc.  Around here everyone gets around 25 yuan a day as a lunch benefit.  These add up a lot when you are on 10,000 as they hit your final expenses.  Of course they are a ridiculous waste of time to chase up, every one of them has a different system and policies for reimbursement and requires the employment of more staff to run the programs.  But you will jump through a lot of hoops if you are on a disposable income of 1317 yuan a month.
