wumpyc Posted January 14, 2014 at 04:13 PM Report Posted January 14, 2014 at 04:13 PM Can somebody translate this for me? Please Quote
Shelley Posted January 14, 2014 at 09:47 PM Report Posted January 14, 2014 at 09:47 PM Are you sure this is supposed to be Chinese? I can recognize some parts of it as Chinese character components but to my eye it doesn't look like any Chinese characters I have seen before. Where did it come from? Any background info would be helpful. Quote
Ruben von Zwack Posted January 14, 2014 at 11:35 PM Report Posted January 14, 2014 at 11:35 PM That's because it's Japanese Hiragana, Shelley! It was derived from Chinese cursive, so that's why you recognise the components. ねえ、 ばか [上/土?] 好きだよ。 Nee, baka. [XY] suki da yo. Hey, idiot. [XY] is great! I'm not sure what the first character in the second line is meant to be, a 上 or 土 or something entirely different? For Shelley: top of each box: original Chinese character, red: some inter stage apparently, bottom: present-day Hiragana. Quote
skylee Posted January 15, 2014 at 12:33 AM Report Posted January 15, 2014 at 12:33 AM It is probably 大好きだよ。 Very bad handwriting. Quote
Ruben von Zwack Posted January 15, 2014 at 12:50 AM Report Posted January 15, 2014 at 12:50 AM With 大 it makes sense, of course! So the second row just means "it's great". Quote
FadedStardust Posted January 15, 2014 at 02:37 AM Report Posted January 15, 2014 at 02:37 AM ねえ、 ばか 大好きだよ。 This could mean 'Hey idiot. It's great!' BUT could also mean 'Hey, idiot, I love you!'(the 'idiot' part could very easily be playful). It's impossible to know which is correct without knowing the context in which it was written. 2 Quote
Shelley Posted January 15, 2014 at 10:42 AM Report Posted January 15, 2014 at 10:42 AM Thanks Ruben von Zwack. I was aware of the connection. I have not studied Japanese deliberately to avoid confusion and overload I have however glanced over the different Japanese writing systems so I can distinguish it from Chinese and avoid wasting time trying to understand it and it then turning out to be Japanese Usually the fact it is Japanese is very obvious to me, but in this case the writing was so bad I couldn't be certain. I hope the OP is pleased with the translation Quote

Ruben von Zwack Posted January 15, 2014 at 10:47 PM Report Posted January 15, 2014 at 10:47 PM You're welcome wumpyc! @Shelley - I see, apologies for my monologue then, I thought I was telling you something exciting new! Usually the fact it is Japanese is very obvious to me, but in this case the writing was so bad I couldn't be certain. Indeed I thought it was secret code at first view. Quote
Shelley Posted January 16, 2014 at 01:13 PM Report Posted January 16, 2014 at 01:13 PM @Ruben von Zwack please don't feel your help wasn't appreciated, other users may have seen this and it may have been exciting and new to them. Sharing information is always good even if it is a repeat of info, it is best to have it twice rather than not all Glad the OP is happy. Quote
