Hi,

My dictionary lists 边 in 右边 as fifth tone and the 边 in 旁边 as first tone.  Can I also either tone for either 边, or is must it be as my dictionary says?

Thanks,

Joe

The way I usually hear native speakers say these is the same as what your dictionary says, but I am not a native speaker myself.

I am relatively sure that you can say yòubiān or yòubian, but it doesn't feel super comfortable to say pángbian instead of pángbiān...

I think most likely, it doesn't matter a great deal.
