deathtrap Posted February 21, 2014 at 11:48 PM Report Share Posted February 21, 2014 at 11:48 PM I found this video on another forum. It's a dubbing of a scene in old chinese. I was wondering how accurate it is and knew there are some really knowledgeable people here. I'm surprised at how much closer it sounds to Thai than modern Mandarin Chinese(to my untrained ear), also at the Qh sound and the rolled R's. What do you guys and girls think? OneEye Posted February 22, 2014 at 01:32 AM Report Share Posted February 22, 2014 at 01:32 AM What do you mean by accurate? The reconstruction is supposedly 鄭張尚芳's, who is well-respected and whose reconstruction bears similarity to William Baxter's. I don't know if the pronunciation on the video is phonetically accurate to what 鄭張尚芳 had in mind (rolled r's? who knows), I imagine you'd have to ask him. deathtrap Posted February 22, 2014 at 02:00 AM Author Report Share Posted February 22, 2014 at 02:00 AM Sorry I'm not a linguist and don't have much knowledge of this field. I saw his name but didn't know anything about him. I always read that we don't have much knowledge of what ancient Chinese sounded like and wanted to hear what others had to say. I just found it interesting, wanted to share, and start some discussion. I also noticed a couple /ʕ/ in there as well. The /q/ and /ʕ/ caught my attention since I speak Arabic. Hofmann Posted February 22, 2014 at 02:11 AM Report Share Posted February 22, 2014 at 02:11 AM Based on how Phjong pronounces his own IPA in other videos, I'm going to say not quite.
