skylee Posted March 2, 2014 at 01:36 PM Report Share Posted March 2, 2014 at 01:36 PM It is better to paste the content on the website rather than attaching a docx file. I wonder if everyone has a programme to read it, or would bother to do so. For the size of the house, I suggest you add hen3 很, or other adverbs like ting3 挺, before the adjective. The words in brackets are not necessary in the sentence, although I guess they are there to remind you of the count words. The outside of the house is not waibiao. Use waimian 外面 instead. PS - For bedroom, 臥室 is very formal. Consider using 房間 or 睡房 instead.

tooironic Posted March 2, 2014 at 08:33 PM Report Share Posted March 2, 2014 at 08:33 PM @skylee I think 臥室 is fine, I don't see how it could be considered very formal. @melodyhuang1 In this context "study" is indeed 書房, not 學習.

skylee Posted March 3, 2014 at 12:12 AM Report Share Posted March 3, 2014 at 12:12 AM @skylee I think 臥室 is fine, I don't see how it could be considered very formal. I disagree. Perhaps formal is not the most suitable description, but 臥室 is not used in everyday language. But you can keep your view and I can keep mine. I think Maddie is about to learn how fun it is to learn Chinese when different regions that speak Chinese use different vocabulary for the same things, and/or the same word having different connotations (formal/informal) depending on region. 淨土極樂 Posted March 4, 2014 at 03:56 PM Report Share Posted March 4, 2014 at 03:56 PM but 臥室 is not used in everyday language This is what happens if one starts confusing Mandarin with Cantonese. To give one more example, 睡觉, an extremely 口语 word in Mandarin is considered 书面语 in Cantonese. Any native Mandarin speaker would use 卧室 in pretty much all situations. My wife even remarked that 睡房 sounds like something from the 民国 era.
