wushijiao Posted April 17, 2005 at 02:26 AM Report Posted April 17, 2005 at 02:26 AM The sucessful artist Chen Yifei died (young) a few days ago, too soon. Here are a few articles about it: http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/english/doc/2005-04/11/content_432946.htm http://www.artnet.com/artist/18267/Chen_Yifei.html http://www.monadnock.net/essays/chen.html On of the essays mentioned above says, Chen Yifei's work does not fit easily into a "Chinese" or "Western" mold. Perhaps his art can be described as "multi-cultural" — not in the current sense of locking up a person in whatever ethnic group he was born into, but in the sense of combining the best of several cultures. Others say he was a bit too commercial, especially towards Western tastes, perhaps like Zhang Yimou. Thoughts? Quote
39degN Posted April 19, 2005 at 04:31 PM Report Posted April 19, 2005 at 04:31 PM yeah, his death is too sudden... you know he was so active those years in fashion and art ralated fields! I'd prefer to consider him a very good businessman! but the facts is, sucessful artists are always good businessman, otherwise they wont be sucessful. Quote
Vivien Posted April 25, 2005 at 05:32 AM Report Posted April 25, 2005 at 05:32 AM I saw some of Chen Yifei's paintings. I think those are interesting but not the type of painting I normally like. I'd prefer to consider him a very good businessman! but the facts is, sucessful artists are always good businessman, otherwise they wont be sucessfulI agree he is a sucessful businessman no matter his art is good or not, but I don’t think the success of an artist will depend on if he/she is successful in business. For example, Vicent Van Gogh could never sell his paintings for living when he's alive, but people remember his name and love his paintings about 115 years after his death. I would say he is a successful artist. Quote
