比。。。 (更)(要) comparing

Hi guys,

I have come across three forms of the 比 structure

One is just with 比

Second is with 要 in addition

Third is with  更 in addition

Anyone mind explaining to me the subtle differences?

Many thanks in advance

One is just with 比

A is ...-er than B.

Second is with 要 in addition

This sentence makes no sense to me.

Third is with  更 in addition

A is even ...-er than B.

other similar constructions:

(the same meaning as 更)

(A is much ...-er than B.)

(A is a little ...-er than B.)

他比我高 means that he is taller than me.

People seldom say that 他比我要高

They usually say 他比我还要高, which means that I'm tall, but he is taller than me.

他比我更高 also means that I'm tall, but he is taller than me.

A比B要+adj is a common structure. The 要 emphasises the adjective, and so is often translated as "even [more]". As it happens I was just reading a book where the person said 我比Alps山還要高!("I'm even taller than the Alps!")

you may also want to note that 更 and 还 can be used similarly with the 比 sentence construction.

i hope im not wrong in saying both mean "we are both tall but B is EVEN taller“

edit:

haha nvm i see that someone else already pointed this out
