I've just arrived in Xiamen, and there is what appears to be a thick smog in the air.

I had thought that Xiamen was a smog free city, but perhaps I was wrong.

Is this smog or something else? Ie fog or low clouds...

yes, if you go to China unfortunately pretty much wherever you go there will be some smog at the moment. According to the government this will get better in the next few years, lets see.

If it is any consolation - I found it great there late last year, especially compared to Beijing. Depending on where you are coming from, that may not mean much.

In my opinion, this will get better in the next few months, this is due to the fact that summer is coming, ant there are fewer fossil fuel in summer, which will be benefit for the smog. You know, in winter, it needs amount of fuel for heating. let's see.

Ahhh ok I understand. So yeh by western standards we still notice the smog. I'm not complaining, it's beautiful here but I just wondered. Thanks for the help! And that's a great resource!

It's been worse than usual in Taipei over the last week or so too, so I'm not surprised that Xiamen is smoggy right now. It'll get better.
