“Elementary My Dear Watson”: How We Adapted a Classic to Chinese

Hi guys, I thought you might enjoy this story of how we adapted a Sherlock Holmes story into a Chinese graded reader. It gives a bit of insight on how we localize and grade the texts into something that is readable for lower level learners.

Full Disclosure: Mandarin Companion is my company and we publish these graded readers that Chinese learners can read.

Interesting read, and I chuckled at your caption down the bottom there. Two small things though: 1) you mention that it was voted the second favourite Holmes story, but the website you cite only lists it as the second favourite Holmes short story. 2) sum of money ;)

Thanks Duck! Made a coupe minor corrections.

Glad you caught the joke at the end! I was afraid most people kind of missed it ;-)

How true. Just had to take the literary license on that one because saying -"Elementary": How We Adapted a Classic- just didn't have the same ring to it  :D
