madizi Posted April 17, 2005 at 05:05 PM Report Posted April 17, 2005 at 05:05 PM Ok, this maybe seems funny or even controversial, but I mean it seriously. Is there any connection between Rousseau, Zhuangzi and Smurfs? Similarities between Rousseau and Zhuangzi are easy to see. Both advocated the principle of living in accordance with nature. But Smurfs? It seems to me that Smurfs are some kind of demonstration of Rousseau's and Zhuangzi's principles. I don't want to say that artist(s) who created Smurfs did know this principles. But it is obvious that Smurfs are some kind of proto-type of "people" who live in accordance with nature. Gargamel is alchemist and thus a proto-type of scientist. And he is the kind of scientist who don't take care of nature. His character is direct critique of scientists who polluted and nearly destroyed nature. Does anybody else see any other connection? I want to say it again that I mean this seriously. As you all know, cartoons are a tool of education and Smurfs are very positive in this way. Wish that there would be more cartoons like this, not just idiotic Teletubbies or shoot-them-all cartoons. Any thoughts? Quote
Catdiseased Posted April 18, 2005 at 02:40 PM Report Posted April 18, 2005 at 02:40 PM Well, Smurfs are seen to be standing for another group of people as well. During my time on the vast and unlimited internet, I have found sites that compare them to the KKK. WOAH, not very positive, huh? But there really ARE some points that you should look at: - many people dressed in white, following their leader who is dressed in red - gathering around a fire during there meetings - the only female is blond(!!) and hard working and always helpful (just like the perfect Arian housewife should be, according to the NS ideology) - their enemy is one with a ugly looking guy who loves gold and has a huge nose (like the stereotype of a Jew during the NS regime) - Gargarmel's cat is named after the Hebrew archangel of death Azrael So yes, I DID like the Smurfs..but that website really started to make me think...hehe Quote
beqstar Posted April 20, 2005 at 10:52 AM Report Posted April 20, 2005 at 10:52 AM hahaha...i, too, have read about 'smurf conspiracies'...actually, i've read a few articles/websites in recent years that claim 'the smurfs' are an advocation of marxism...here is a quick-read (though out-dated, however 'the smurfs' are an old prgm, anyways)... http://dailybeacon.utk.edu/issues/v76/n52/smurfs.53a.html i will try to find something more comprehensive!! even saturday morning cartoons have an agenda!! madizi Posted April 20, 2005 at 12:15 PM Author Report Posted April 20, 2005 at 12:15 PM Interesting thoughts! Didn't think about Arian or Communist interpretation. Sounds scary! But how would we connect them to Rousseau or at least just to Zhuangzi? Quote
gougou Posted April 20, 2005 at 12:20 PM Report Posted April 20, 2005 at 12:20 PM Whoa, this is scary. I read them once in a while when I was young, and, before you know it, I'm in Russia, and studying Chinese... Quote
beqstar Posted April 21, 2005 at 12:00 PM Report Posted April 21, 2005 at 12:00 PM But how would we connect them to Rousseau or at least just to Zhuangzi? well...Rousseau had illegitimate children, and what was with the whole 'Papa Smurf' deal? Quote
