Special Kid Posted March 23, 2014 at 05:56 PM Report Posted March 23, 2014 at 05:56 PM Hello everyone, sorry if the topic doesn't belong here (I didn't know were to put it)... I study Chinese and never really talked to someone. I heard it's recommended to speak Chinese with a person who studies English and that way both sides "win"... Can anyone tell me where can I find an English student who speaks Chinese? Quote
LinBB Posted March 24, 2014 at 05:40 AM Report Posted March 24, 2014 at 05:40 AM I don't know if I am allowed to post links or not, so I will not post them for now. I am active on two websites where I think you will find the people you are looking for. Until I find out whether I can post links or not, you can start by Google "language exchange." I don't know how effective it is, but so far I have been enjoying doing language exchange with Spanish speakers! I hope you will have fun too Good luck! Depending on your Mandarin level, it will be easier for you to find someone who is at least at an intermediate level (my personal experience). Quote
imron Posted March 24, 2014 at 06:21 AM Report Posted March 24, 2014 at 06:21 AM Links are ok, but if you are connected in any way to the site just make sure to make that connection clear when making your post. 2 Quote
LinBB Posted March 24, 2014 at 07:56 AM Report Posted March 24, 2014 at 07:56 AM imron, Okay. Thanks! Special Kid, The two websites that I use are Italki & Lang-8. I am a member on both sites. On Italki, I am a community tutor (anyone can apply to become a community tutor). Lang-8 I use it for sentence corrections. They have a nice format for sentence correction. I have seen posts where people are looking for language partners and it seems to be quite successful. The website is: http://www.lang-8.com Italki is where I found most of my language partners. See the end of the post for some tips that will hopefully will help you have a better experience. Italki has a mix of free and paid service. So make sure you are on the right page (see link below) for language exchange: http://www.italki.com/partners Tips for Italki language partner searching: You can make a post in English and/or Chinese Mandarin discussion board page saying that you are looking for a language partner. Use the Language Exchange partner page to search for potential language partners. Be patient. You may not get any reply from some people. But it will be worth it once you find the right language partner! Look through discussion board for other people's language exchange posts. Language exchange with a community tutor/professional teacher. Some members are community tutors (native speakers) and/or professional teachers. Don't worry, approach them anyways! I am a community tutor but I am available for language exchange. The reverse story hasn't happened to me yet but just saying hehe ^^" Lastly, good luck and have fun!!! (^_^) 3 Quote

Demonic_Duck Posted March 25, 2014 at 11:48 PM Report Posted March 25, 2014 at 11:48 PM You can also use "classifieds" websites such as Craigslist or Gumtree (I think the latter is only for the UK). The Couchsurfing site can also be a good bet - lots of people on there are willing to do language exchanges, even if you don't want to use the site for its primary purpose. 1 Quote
Ruben von Zwack Posted March 26, 2014 at 09:24 AM Report Posted March 26, 2014 at 09:24 AM I've too met nice Chinese who learn German via lang-8, and thus get my regular dose of spoken and colloquial Chinese, which is fun and good! 1 Quote
