Hi evryone i have a question about the function of 就是 in this following exrecise:

its an "arrange sentences" drill, and the sentences are:

1. 给我留下了很深的印象

2。面试的时候表现得非常出色

3。就是那个大学生

according to de answer in the book the correct order is: 3, 2, 1. but i cant seem to understand why...

whats worng with 1,3,2? and i cant understand the function of 就是 here, is it in the means of "exactly"?

many thanks in advance

I think 3 2 1 is possible. Sometimes textbook answers are not absolute, and there can be other possibly correct answers.

You're right, 就是 does indeed mean "exactly", "precisely" or "it is no other than" here. We don't have an exact word for it in English, at least not one that matches exactly the sense being evoked in this sentence.

Because 1,3,2 makes no sequential sense.  A rough (very bad translation) of 1,3,2 would be something like "and left a very good impression that university student during the interview showed to be outstanding".

Edit: actually as RayLu points out, what I wrote below is wrong because I'm one 的 short.

Maybe like this:

If 3 + 2 + 1 = [he's that student ] [ who came across really well during the interview ] [and left a big impression on me]

... then both the following are fine too:

1 + 3 = [the guy who left a big impression on me]  [ he's that student]

(description comes first, the subject/topic comes second)

3 + 1 = [he's that student ] [who left a big impression on me.]

(subject/topic comes first, description comes second)

but with 1 + 3 + 2 = [the guy who left a big impression on me ] [ he's that student] [ and came across really well during the interview]

......... this doesn't work. You need some kind of break, a comma or a full stop, between #3 and #2.

 给我留下了很深的印象就是那个大学生.面试的时候表现得非常出色.

At the beginning of the sentence, 就是 functions pretty much like "It is/was" + [Noun] in English, introducing and foregrounding the following noun.

就是 is used here to stress. Like the sentence "it is him who....."

your answer 1,3,2 is not correct, as in Chinese, a sentence always begin with a subject instead of putting it at the end.

For example, 那个大学生给我留下了很深的印象. 那个大学生 is a subject and in the beginning of the sentence. This is right.

More detail in this sentence, 那个大学生 is Subject, 给 is Predicate, 我 is Object and 留下了深刻的印象 is adverbial.

However, 给我留下了很深的印象那个大学生 is wrong with the subject at the end.  In your question 就是 here is just used to stress, it will not break the basic grammar.

Further more, to add one word in the question can make your answer correct:

1. 给我留下了很深的印象

2。面试的时候表现得非常出色

3。就是那个大学生

给我留下了很深的印象的就是那个大学生 is correct.

给我留下了很深的印象的 is the subject. 就是 is not only used to stress but also as Predicate. 那个大学生 is Object.

This may be a little complicated for you. Just ignore.

If you want to make 132 right, you should revise it as:

给我留下了很深的印象的就是那个大学生,他面试的时候表现得非常出色。

If you don't do that, 321 is correct.

就是那个大学生,面试的时候表现得非常出色,给我留下了很深的印象。

If you want to make 312 correct, it should be:

就是那个大学生,给我留下了很深的印象。面试的时候他表现得非常出色。

the difference is about the mark, objective, reason and result, etc.

就是 is the word to emphasize something. Maybe feels like "It is him".
