求助! - Chinese slang and colloquial language

Hi,

nowadays is quite fashonable among young people in china to use the word "cool".

There are different translations of it, for example 有型 and 有派,but the most common one is ku4 酷. For example 酷哥 means a "cool guy".

We keep a collection of slang. Entries are marked with the flag SLANG in the FLAG field of the database. This will show you the entries we have.

http://www.adsotrans.com/adso/uniedit.pl?word=&show_flag=on&search_english=&show_english=on&show_examples=on&search_flag=SLANG&show_pinyin=on&search_pinyin=&show_definition=on

Some entries come with commentaries on usage and example sentences, as well as some information on regions where they are used. DONGBEI refers to Northeastern Slang, for instance. You won't hear it in other parts of the country. Other entries are relatively antiquated (as noted in the definition space).

Incidentally, its actually kind of disheartening to find people tossing slang out into a thread like this every few months, since the new and interesting entries get lost in a flood of discussion about 操. If you are compiling this information, perhaps you'll take the next step and make it available to the community in turn. If you need a format/architecture that supports data entry and storage for this sort of thing, you should try looking at Adso.

The language used by young people on chat programs on internet is strongly influencing their way of writing and speacking. There are numerous examples of this interesting fenomenon:

1. Using numbers imitating the sound of a certain character:

55555 sounds like 呜呜呜呜呜,that's the sound made by one person crying

88 sounds like 白白 (or 拜拜) that is in turn a kind of phonetic transciption of the english "bye bye"

2. Using roman carachetrs as abbreviations of chinese words:

YD means 淫荡 (yindang, lascivious, lewd)

MM means 妹妹 meimei, indicating a young and good-looking girl

3. Using roman characters in different ways, for example

我跟他见面了n 次 means that we already met a lot of times

...I like 打飞机。 For masturbation. To be incredibly crude the spunk flies out like an areoplane.

Is that what it is? I thought it was based on the image of "anti-aircraft fire" (打飞机), since you are shooting missile material skyward. Sort of.

I actually think I know more bad Chinese than good. Off the top of my head:

Penis: 小鸡鸡, 小弟弟

Breasts: 奶子, 秘密 (actually the latter means "privates" but is in my experience usually used for breasts)

An troublemaker (male) (clumsy translation but more accurate than "hooligan"): 流氓

Hick: 土包子 (人)

Stupid: 二百五 (in Dalian we also have 二虎虎). The only explanation I have heard for this is that since weights in China are measured in 斤 and 1 斤 = 500 grams, 250 is a half measure. So it's similar to "halfwit". I'm not 100% sold on this explanation, though.

Son-of-a-bitch: 王八蛋

Fvck off: 去 你 妈的

And my personal favourite: 去 你 妈的 腿, Which means "go fvck your mother's leg".

Oh and in Dalian we have biaozi meaning stupid, in a playful way, however I don't know the characters and am not sure of the tone, so I never use it. Since if I get the wrong tone it stops being a playful insult.

Also you can take 屄 and add just about any insulting term before it to make it incredibly insulting. Just like the English equivalent.

Oh, and 同志 is known to mean homosexual here, both by the college students and the middle-aged government officials I teach.

I just learned tonight that 茶店 doesn't actually mean a place to buy tea but rather a place for a girl to sit with you and let you 吃豆腐 (which means to make out with her).

I love tea and tofu and now i know why. :help

Posted

Those are interesting euphamisms. There's a similar one in Japanese -- お茶しない?(ocha shinai?) -- which literally means "shall we have tea?" but can mean "wanna do it?" kind of like "you wanna come in for some coffee?"

I think it's funny that "eating tofu" is making out.

Some are pretty bad and some look quite innocent but they all are romanized wihout even tone marks (it's not pinyin), will someone convert these (or some of them) into proper Chinese characters just for the education purposes?

Thanks,

From the ones you haven't corrected: wa tsao = wo cao, mai bee = mai bi, Ni male ge bi = Ni made ge bi

Some of them are quite mild, whereas others... :nono

Can you show, which ones are which?

Posted

I thought 色狼 se4lang2 meant 'pervert'. Which for many Chinese means someone who enjoys sex and is open about it.

What are those terms in characters?

Posted

I'd like to point out that not all Chinese slang is as offensive as say American slang, for example.

like: 没门儿 (me2i me2nr) which is 北京方言, but might still be considered slang because in order to understand its meaning context is extremely important. It doesn't mean 'no door' when used in the slang sense, rather it is a metaphor meaning 'no way; impossible'.

does anyone else have insight on this kind of Chinese slang?

What are those terms in characters?

Must be too offensive, nobody wants to answer. I can see the English translation is wrong.

Oh and in Dalian we have biaozi meaning stupid, in a playful way, however I don't know the characters and am not sure of the tone, so I never use it.

I believe the characters are 彪子, and there's also the Dalianese 血彪 which means something along the lines of bloody idiot .

By the way, 大肚子, whereabouts in Dalian are you?
