13cyberphoenix Posted May 6, 2014 at 04:54 PM Report Posted May 6, 2014 at 04:54 PM I want to focus on improving my listening skills. I am almost finished with Pimsleur and want to continue using audio programs. For anyone familiar with learning Korean, I found talktomeinkorean.com to be very helpful when it came to improving one's listening skills in Korean. I'm already aware that there's websites like Chinesepod, but it seems like all of them require payment. Is there a similar website for Chinese that is FREE other than chineseclass101.com and chinese-tools.com? Quote
etm001 Posted May 6, 2014 at 06:01 PM Report Posted May 6, 2014 at 06:01 PM Check out: http://www.popupchinese.com/ http://www.slow-chinese.com/ http://www.imandarinpod.com/hoola/ PopUp Chinese has a paid option, but you can listen to many lessons for free. See also this blog post: http://www.fluentu.com/chinese/blog/2014/01/18/chinese-podcasts/ The FluentU blogger lists 青春愛消遣 as being "beginner to intermediate", but from the one episode that I listened to, it definitely was not "beginner" material. 1 Quote
James3 Posted May 6, 2014 at 06:26 PM Report Posted May 6, 2014 at 06:26 PM 13cyberphoenix when you say you're almost finished with Pimsleur, do you mean you're about to complete all 120 lessons? (30 lessons each from Mandarin I, II, III, and IV?) Or that, irrespective of how far you've gotten with Pimsleur, you're ready to move on to something else? (Kind of asking, in case you were unaware of the "Mandarin IV" that was released around December of 2013.) 1 Quote
hedwards Posted May 7, 2014 at 12:10 AM Report Posted May 7, 2014 at 12:10 AM Is there any reason why you're not moving on to movies and actual conversation? I'm not really sure exactly how much material the whole Pimsleur series covers, but from the looks of it you should be ready for moving onward. Quote
imron Posted May 7, 2014 at 01:46 AM Report Posted May 7, 2014 at 01:46 AM Maybe also the glossika materials: http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/44440-glossika-method/ 1 Quote
Mouseneb Posted May 7, 2014 at 11:21 AM Report Posted May 7, 2014 at 11:21 AM I've added some native podcasts to my listening practice: 老外看点 坏蛋调频 新闻酸菜馆 You can subscribe to those via iTunes. Also try Important Chinese Things with Jenny Zhu and iMandarinpod.com 1 Quote
13cyberphoenix Posted May 11, 2014 at 06:24 PM Author Report Posted May 11, 2014 at 06:24 PM Alot of those websites require membership and subscription. I am looking for a FREE website, like talktomeinkorean.com. Imandarinpod is also free, but I find it a pain that the transcripts are not in English and its a pain to copy and paste the Chinese sentences into google translate since the pinyin gets in the way Quote
grawrt Posted May 11, 2014 at 11:35 PM Report Posted May 11, 2014 at 11:35 PM Really? Ive used popup chinese plenty of times and I can assure you its 100% free. If you want to get a paid subscription you can but otherwise the lesson downloads, etc. are all free. Same with slow-chinese. FluentU also has free lessons too, even if they have a paid subscription as well. A couple members on site recently wrote up a review on the website so you can take a look if you're interested. Popupchinese is really great because they have the transcripts for you (english, pinyin, characters). You can watch the episodes on the site or download them to watch later. But the lessons are kind of random lol. 1 Quote
13cyberphoenix Posted May 18, 2014 at 05:00 PM Author Report Posted May 18, 2014 at 05:00 PM popchinese's transcripts are not free. I don't see the transcripts in English for slow-chinese. Quote
grawrt Posted May 19, 2014 at 12:17 AM Report Posted May 19, 2014 at 12:17 AM *edit* sorry my bad. I just noticed I have a premium account. I think they had a special free premium upgrade a while back....Slow-chinese doesn't have english transcripts. Only Chinese. Quote
lechuan Posted May 19, 2014 at 01:59 AM Report Posted May 19, 2014 at 01:59 AM Happy Chinese has English subtitles Quote
