Shipping a laptop to China

Hello, 

 

I  need to ship a laptop to my girlfriend in China.  Her computer just died and I have an extra laptop sitting around.  

 

I have been trying to do some research on what is required to accomplish this; however, the information is either extremely old or varies wildly.  I want to ship it as safely and reasonably as possible.  She lives in a kind of rural area so it is difficult to get specific pricing.  It is not a new laptop, but customs information is unclear.  I would like to know specifically:

1. What is the least expensive/reliable way to ship
2. Customs costs/duties
3. Anything else I am not thinking about

If you've not tried it already, and the package is all taped up and ready to go, I bet you could call UPS, FedEx, and DHL and give them the measurements and weight, and get an estimate.
