Johnny20270 Posted September 13, 2014 at 09:45 AM Report Posted September 13, 2014 at 09:45 AM Dear god guys! some times I think people just argue for the sake of it, walk around the world blind, or maybe some posters on this forum are the guys who I have just described (given its a chinese forum). I have said this to several times to chinese girls and they say giggle and say "ahh yes, thats true!" Even as I type this sitting here in Costa there is an English bloke opposite me who is about 40 and his gf is about late 20's. She is quite pretty and he looks like a total nerd. Trust me he won't get an equivalent English woman. Many of my work colleagues date Asian girls and they are in their 50's and the girl is in their late 30's. The guys are rich, the girls are usually Phillipino or Chinese. But don't get me wrong, I see nothing wrong with it. Its fine if you can punch above your weight and I'm happy for them. And yes I am referring to just appearances here. As for a Chinese guy with a western girl, I mentioned that in my whole life I have never seen one (except for Bruce Lee). Sure they are exceptions but what is it 19 out of 20 maybe. I have even seen Chinese people even take photos pf it and post it of My Moments is that rare. As for do I think Chinese girls are attractive? Generally no I don't think Chinese are an attractive race on average but that's just me. Its not a reflection of the girl's. I think Japanese are better looking Some people on this forum just sit on the fence on every topic. Quote
Demonic_Duck Posted September 13, 2014 at 02:20 PM Report Posted September 13, 2014 at 02:20 PM Gotta be honest, here in Beijing when I see mixed Chinese/western couples, they're normally both average-looking. Sometimes the woman's better looking, sometimes the man is, I wouldn't say there's a strong bias in either direction. I do think you're onto something with your observation that there are relatively few Chinese man/western woman couples (a fact that's been pointed out repeatedly by most people with a pair of functioning eyes), although such couples are far from nonexistant. The reasons for this have been speculated upon in other threads - when I've asked western female friends why they wouldn't be likely to date a Chinese guy, their answers mostly center around expected cultural differences, particularly how they'd expect the guy to expect them to behave. As for age difference, I don't think that's particularly skewed in favour of older westerner/younger Chinese, as long as you control for the trend towards older man/younger woman, which is definitely noticeable, and more pronounced than in most western countries. That said, I've also (very rarely) seen western guys who look to be in their sixties with Chinese girls who are probably still in university, although the girls in these types of relationships are invariably not particularly attractive. 2 Quote
Guest realmayo Posted September 13, 2014 at 08:28 PM Report Posted September 13, 2014 at 08:28 PM Is anyone (else) here guilty of ever catching themselves in the rather unpleasant thought process that goes something along the lines of 'that foreign guy thinks he's got himself a real hottie but as an experienced China resident with my effortless production of er-hua / nonchalant ignoring of retroflexes (delete as appropriate), my avoidance of the word 'guanxi' and my hard-won appreciation of certain things McDonalds has to offer, I can bask in my superior knowledge of Chinese prettiness which judges her "not-much-of-a-catch-by-Chinese-standards"'? Guest realmayo Posted September 13, 2014 at 08:41 PM Report Posted September 13, 2014 at 08:41 PM Can you elaborate? Not sure if I'm understanding you correctly. Lu, I just meant that going outside the group where that's rare is easily seen as a judgement on that status quo of group-belonging and logically is saying 'I don't value staying within the group as much as you do' which also means 'I don't value the group as much as you do'. And when it involves a girl finding an outsider-boy then it's easily seen as a judgement on the men in the group. Then there are other aggravating issues. 15 years ago in plenty of parts of China it would be more tricky for a girl who'd had a western boyfriend to find a nice Chinese guy. I presume it's different in most places these days? Or for Koreans, I think one reason they're reluctant initially to let outsiders in is that they have such a 'polite' and hierarchical society that anyone new will inevitably be blundering around missing the point and perhaps insulting or annoying people without realising it. So that can delay any kind of easy friendship with foreigners. But I'm still quite surprised and interested that Korean girls are really risking so much if they have a foreign boyfriend, I'd never picked up on that before. Perhaps its exacerbated near military bases and generally easier with a bunch of Koreans studying abroad? Quote
renzhe Posted September 13, 2014 at 10:17 PM Report Posted September 13, 2014 at 10:17 PM I have said this to several times to chinese girls and they say giggle and say "ahh yes, thats true!"Then surely we can put this issue at rest, now it has been decisively proven beyond any reasonable doubt! I can add to the anecdotes with some stories from Europe. Two good-looking Asian friends of mine (Japanese and Taiwanese) both dated gorgeous blonde German girls. Another one (Mongolian) married an attractive Brazilian girl, they have a baby. A fourth one (Korean) would have made quite a catch, but he was gay, to the disappointment of many ladies. It also goes in the other direction, of course, with many female Asian friends of mine ending up happy with a European partner. I also have a really unattractive female Chinese acquaintance who went through one successful and rich engineer after another. Two friends of mine actually fought over her, for reasons I'll never understand. My own experience is the opposite, however. My girlfriend is only with me out of pity. There's no other explanation. As for a Chinese guy with a western girl, I mentioned that in my whole life I have never seen oneIn England? You really need to get out more. I can think of two close friends of mine from my time in England who dated drop-dead-gorgeous European girls. It is true that it is still a bit asymmetrical, but not nearly as much as some people think. @realmayo: Perhaps its exacerbated near military bases and generally easier with a bunch of Koreans studying abroad?I am not an expert on Koreans, but having trained in Korean martial arts for the better part of 20 years, I've interacted with quite a few. I don't think that this is much of a problem in Europe at least, except in the most conservative of families. I personally know 3 Korean girls who married European husbands and were happy ever after. They were rather independent and accomplished women, though, for what that is worth (a postdoc, a professional musician, etc...) 1 Quote
Simon_CH Posted September 15, 2014 at 06:31 AM Report Posted September 15, 2014 at 06:31 AM Glad most people see it that way too. I was always puzzled how my perceived reality was so much at odds with the conventional wisdom that every looser gets a drop dead gorgeous girlfriend in China. I just don't see that happening here in Beijing, at least not with foreign-Chinese couples, which at least look-wise seem to match mostly. Some of the Chinese guys who have really beautiful girlfriends however... but that's another topic entirely. Quote

Berating such a woman or badmouthing her intended boyfriend still seems extreme though. 1 Quote
Popular Post daofeishi Posted September 16, 2014 at 01:03 AM Popular Post Report Posted September 16, 2014 at 01:03 AM Christ, are we really having a discussion about whether it is accurate to say Chinese-Western couples consist of one male loser and one female gold digger? Who outside of a high school locker room would go around talking about couples in terms of who is "uglier" than who, who "can't get some", who's a "loser", who's "desperate", and all these other terms that are bandied about here as if they became completely valid characterizations when applied to expats in China and their SO's? People who stay together tend to stay together based on more than selfish interests in sex or green cards. Anyone who hasn't seen that Chinese-Western couples tend to be like all other couples in this respect should try interacting with people outside of their bathroom mirrors, or contact their ophthalmologists. 9 Quote

Guest realmayo Posted September 16, 2014 at 07:55 AM Report Posted September 16, 2014 at 07:55 AM Who outside of a high school locker room Hmm, lots of people actually, just because one would wish it isn't so doesn't mean it isn't so; just because one would wish any kind of mismatch to be neither relevant nor interesting, doesn't mean it isn't relevant or interesting. We look, we see, we evaluate, we judge, we compare, it's what humans do. Here's one of today's news headlines: Austrian Billionaire, 81, Marries Playboy Model, 24. People who stay together But discussion was not limited to relationships that last decades. Quote
geraldc Posted September 16, 2014 at 08:27 AM Report Posted September 16, 2014 at 08:27 AM When you see a tall hot blonde Russian in a dingy night club in a small City in China, surely everyone thinks "hooker". Stereotypes affect everyone. I've never seen other Westerners step in to try protect her from the Chinese guy she's with. Normally he's too busy on the phone doing business, to even notice he's in a night club. Quote

Stereotypes affect everyone. I've never seen other Westerners step in to try protect her from the Chinese guy she's with. Normally he's too busy on the phone doing business, to even notice he's in a night club There was a soppy liberal democrat politician on the radio a few days ago in the UK taking questions from the listeners. A concerned member asked him what the council would do about all the "beauty parlours" in her area in London run by Thai's and other East Asian . He got very defensive and said we shouldn't stereotype and the Thais are a hard working and great group of people (also count for a lot of the electoral population in that area). Its a poorer area of London and naturally most guys that walk in there just want a pedicure after a hard days slog on the building sites 1 Quote
carlo Posted September 19, 2014 at 04:11 AM Report Posted September 19, 2014 at 04:11 AM I just saw this video, that apparently went viral earlier this year (this provides some relevant Canto practice). Frankly I've seen these scenes play out in clubs and, while unpleasant for the "loser", had everyone been from the same ethnic group nobody would care (in fact, I think I had a guy pull this on me when I was 18 or so -- it was obviously the girl's loss). Even here in HK, however, some people see it as being "us vs them". Quote
studychinese Posted September 19, 2014 at 04:27 AM Report Posted September 19, 2014 at 04:27 AM Carlo, that just looks like competition rather than cockblocking. Also the fact that those girls were speaking English changes the context considerably. Quote
JustinJJ Posted September 20, 2014 at 10:13 PM Report Posted September 20, 2014 at 10:13 PM Carlo, are you sure that video set up? Most people would drop the other guy and it's pretty unbelievable none of them seem to mind that everthing's being recorded on video. Quote
metal.lunchbox Posted September 21, 2014 at 02:34 AM Report Posted September 21, 2014 at 02:34 AM This could just be some straight-up racism. This use kind of thing use to happen a lot with black men in the U.S. being suspected by white men of some form of inappropriate sexual behavior with white women regardless of the intentions or actual behavior of the suspected. I've seen plenty of situations in which some Chinese men wanted to protect their women ( notice the sexism ) from the assumed predatory behavior of non-asian men. It doesn't matter what you do, they may simply be concerned with your racial features. If your situation is something like the racism I describe then there is little you can do to fix it, in which case I suggest you find some combination of ignoring their ignorance, and avoiding getting into too much trouble, depending on the particularities of your circumstances and the risks involved. Where in this thread did anyone mention staying together? Long-term Chinese-Western couples do tend to be like all other couples. But it can't be denied that there is also a significant proportion of stereotypical couples, who tend not to last very long, unsurprisingly. Quote
carlo Posted September 22, 2014 at 06:49 AM Report Posted September 22, 2014 at 06:49 AM @Study, Justin I've no idea, it's a strange video. Probably they're all drunk, or acting, or both. Technically it's not rooster blocking. I just find it odd that what looks like a relatively common incident among teenagers easily gets blown out of proportion, even in this very tolerant city, as one "group" losing out to another "group", with the women involved being called names (that's in the comments, and to be fair, some of the commenters are more open-minded).
