character Posted June 1, 2014 at 07:15 AM Report Posted June 1, 2014 at 07:15 AM http://www.mcgreene.org/?p=296 "Once, a seller who queried me about what I was looking for in somewhat halting English reacted with surprise when I responded in Chinese that I was looking for opera lianhuanhua, especially anything with ghosts. He dragged a few things out (most of which I bought), then pointed to another one, which was neither opera nor ghost related. "It was Star Wars. In lianhuanhua form. From 1980. It was simply so incongruous I couldn’t leave it behind." The post has links to scans of it at the bottom. 4 Quote
Meng Lelan Posted June 2, 2014 at 01:14 AM Report Posted June 2, 2014 at 01:14 AM The lianhuanhua I used to buy in the 1990s in Shanghai and Beijing were incredible. They would do all the Chinese classics in color plates. Now there were some western classics too, including Shakespeare but none so spectacular what they were doing with Journey to the West and so forth. 1 Quote
Ruben von Zwack Posted June 2, 2014 at 07:36 PM Report Posted June 2, 2014 at 07:36 PM Meng Lelan, do you still have any of these? Chinese classics in colour plates sounds like... like something I'd kill for Quote
Meng Lelan Posted June 2, 2014 at 11:26 PM Report Posted June 2, 2014 at 11:26 PM Oh they were fabulous. I still have the Journey to the West color plate version from the 1990s. I don't think they publish anything like this anymore but hope I am wrong about this as I have not been shopping in Shanghai for eons.
