tooironic Posted June 14, 2014 at 12:08 AM Report Posted June 14, 2014 at 12:08 AM Was wondering what everyone thought about the differences between 兴奋 & 激动 (excited), and 孤独 & 寂寞 (lonely). My understanding is: 兴奋: a general term for being "excited" 激动: means both "excited" and "agitated" or "emotional" depending on the situation 孤独: means "lonely" in a general sense, emphasising the fact that one is by oneself, solitary 寂寞: means "lonely", but emphasises more the romantic, or yearning side of it Am I on the right track? Are there any other important differences? Thanks in advance. Quote
Carl Chen Posted June 14, 2014 at 03:19 AM Report Posted June 14, 2014 at 03:19 AM To my understanding, 興奮: excited, overjoy (very happy). It is not frequently used in everyday conversation, but in narratives. 明天就要去畢業旅行了,我興奮地睡不著覺. 他興奮地向我描述這次去歐洲玩的經歷. 激動: some events emotionally stir you (in either negative or positive) 1. 你冷靜一點,不要這麼激動. 2. 他一看到偶像就激動地跳起來. 孤獨: alone (only one person in that situation) similar to 孤單,獨自,孤零零 他晚年膝下無子,孤獨一生. 了解孤獨,就不寂寞. 寂寞: lonely (there could be more than one person) 即使兒孫滿堂,失去老伴的他仍時常感到寂寞. 雖然他有很多朋友,但是他還是時常感到寂寞. 1 Quote
