ChTTay Posted June 21, 2014 at 12:25 PM Report Posted June 21, 2014 at 12:25 PM Recently, there have been periods where I've been unable to access chinese-forums at all. I just get the old "page cannot be displayed" message. If I keep trying and trying during these periods, sometimes I manage to get the website to load but improperly or just partially - it's not useable. It seemed just to be from my IsP at first as, when I was in cafes, it was working. However, I was in a cafe recently and it wouldn't load. I had the same problem - cannot be displayed. This had mostly been taking place in Wudaokou. Then I also sent my friend a link to a topic that would interest her and She couldn't access the site either. She lives the other side of Beijing from me. Anyone else had this in Beijing or China? Quote
elina Posted June 21, 2014 at 03:22 PM Report Posted June 21, 2014 at 03:22 PM Yes, I also encountered this: loading speed is very slow, or cannot access this site. Quote
tysond Posted June 23, 2014 at 04:29 AM Report Posted June 23, 2014 at 04:29 AM Same. Site is not usable without VPN now. Quote
ouyangjun Posted June 23, 2014 at 06:38 AM Report Posted June 23, 2014 at 06:38 AM Same... site is barely usable without a VPN. (Suzhou/Shanghai area) Quote
Simon_CH Posted June 23, 2014 at 08:54 AM Report Posted June 23, 2014 at 08:54 AM I always assumed that the site was blocked in China, as bizarre and counterproductive as that would be... but yes, same here. Cannot access it without VPN, Quote
michaelS Posted June 24, 2014 at 01:59 PM Report Posted June 24, 2014 at 01:59 PM Same in Dalian - or at least, it rarely fully loads. It doesn't just go auto-blocked like some sites Quote
ChTTay Posted June 24, 2014 at 05:01 PM Author Report Posted June 24, 2014 at 05:01 PM Originally, the problem I had was that the site runs twitter and facebook scripts that caused the site to hang. I believe google analytics does the same. Recently though, i get more and more "page cannot be loaded" messages. I don't have a VPN and probably won't buy one soon so I hopw I can still get access... roddy Posted June 27, 2014 at 02:07 PM Report Posted June 27, 2014 at 02:07 PM I've spent some time the last couple of days looking at this and have made some changes - any difference being noticed? "I don't have a VPN and probably won't buy one soon" Can I buy you one? Seriously, it might almost be worth me bulk buying VPN accounts to hand out to regulars. Quote
gato Posted June 27, 2014 at 03:09 PM Report Posted June 27, 2014 at 03:09 PM It was working already for me in Shanghai without using VPN, but it seems to be loading faster now. Quote
grawrt Posted June 27, 2014 at 03:19 PM Report Posted June 27, 2014 at 03:19 PM Yeah I noticed the site has been loading a lot faster this week. Quote
ouyangjun Posted June 28, 2014 at 08:17 AM Report Posted June 28, 2014 at 08:17 AM The site is loading better the past few days for me as well Quote
tysond Posted June 28, 2014 at 10:25 AM Report Posted June 28, 2014 at 10:25 AM Faster - much more usable without VPN now. Quote
ChTTay Posted June 28, 2014 at 02:33 PM Author Report Posted June 28, 2014 at 02:33 PM The site loads a lot faster. Also, before you did whatever you did (what was that by the way?) it would always hang when i commented on a thread. A green loading bar would popup and never go away, however, if i refreshed or opened a new window my comment would be in the thread. Now comments are lightening quick in comparison. Quote
mouse Posted June 29, 2014 at 03:58 AM Report Posted June 29, 2014 at 03:58 AM Can confirm what everyone else has been saying: before without VPN the site was much slower to load, lots of hanging, but now it seems fine. Quote
